Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.
Sweet Static is an mp3 blog that allows me to share the music I love and also to point out other cool things around the internet that catch my attention. It is also a place where I can talk about my radio show by the same name, now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on CJAM 91.5 FM in Windsor, Ontario.
Got something I should hear? Email me at sweetstatic @ gmail.com. All comments left here are emailed to my inbox, so you can get a hold of me that way also. You can also follow the show/me on twitter at sweetstaticcjam.

On Monday I saw the big indie bill of Land Of Talk, Shout Out Out Out Out and Holy Fuck play at the university pub here in Windsor. I really liked Land Of Talk, so much so that I missed most of Holy Fuck to talk with Elizabeth of Land Of Talk who was kind enough to to be bugged for the Sweet Static Grand Slam.
1-Who is your favorite Muppet? She aspired to be the Joni Mitchell-esqu Janice but related more to Gonzo.
2-What is your favorite band or artist that no one knows about? Elfin Saddle and cRap Your Pants
3-The drink that you hate to do. Jagermeister
4-Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for a significant other. 1-Eisley-"Just Like We Do" 2-Wilco-"Nothing Up My Sleeve" (note she wasn't sure of the song title but gave me a lyric and that it was a b-side so this is my best guess) 3-Diane Cluck-"Easy To Be Around"
Here are a couple of Land Of Talk songs you can download from their Myspace page
Sweet Static Grand Slam-Alun Piggins And The Quitters
For the last couple of years a constant visitor to the Windsor area has been Alun Piggins And The Quitters. Last Saturday had another visit from the band and it was as usual a great show and lots of fun. Really great crowd, one of the best I've seen in his many shows down here.
Anyways after the show I was able to bug head man himself, Alun Piggins with the Sweet Static Grand Slam.
1-Who is your favorite Muppet?
First he said Animal. Then he moved on to Kermit before finally settling on Sam, the eagle.
2-What is your favorite band or artist that no one knows about?
Sheep Look Up-old band from London, Ontario that you can check out here and here.
3-The drink that you hate to do.
Anything sweet.
4-Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for a significant other.

Well almost all the bands are now announced for the P.A. Music Festival, that will be taking place September 28-30 in Windsor, Ontario. Previously I posted the line-up for Phog and this weekend I found out that The Avalon Front line-up had been put up on the Phog Blog.
Busy week and had other things that I wanted to post about so I never got around to doing my weekly recap of John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for September 9, until today. So here we go.
Ben Kweller is up first. He has a new album coming out and he's put two songs from it up on his Myspace page. Sakamoto brings up the song "Penny On The Train Track", comparing it to Kweller's work with The Bens. It's a really fun song that you can check out here.
Brooklyn's Dirty On Purpose is up next. Calling their album Hallelujah Sirens a prime suspect to be the most overlooked album of the year, he points out the song "Your Summer Dress" saying it's, "a cross between the Smashing Pumpkins' '1979' and The Police's 'Every Breath You Take'." You can stream it on their Myspace page here. Also here's a song from their homepage that you can download. Dirty On Purpose-"Mind Blindness"
Next up is Summer Hymns. Misra Records is releasing their album in November and is making the song "Pity And Envy" available for download. A really relaxed song with some great lyrics. I'm looking forward to checking out more from them. Summer Hymns-"Pity And Envy"
Last we have the "Hurts Like Teen Spirit" mash-up featuruing Johnny Cash vs. Nirvana with a touch of Blue Oyster Cult and New Order thrown in. This is a really great mash and as Sakamoto says it's one of the "rare mash-ups that shoots for something far more subversive than being a cool party trick. I'm pretty sure this has been making the rounds of the blogs but nothing wrong with it getting out some more. From The Control Centre. DJ Dangerous Orange-"Hurts Like Teen Spirit"

It's a really good interview and there are two tracks played from the his forthcoming album, The Letting Go. Like the Albini interview, this will be archieved for a month.
Not really much new here, but in Patterson Hood's latest update for the Truckers gives a nice retrospective on September 11 and on their greatest album (in my opinion) Southern Rock Opera.
From their email update...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Y'ALL:
It was five years ago today that we first released SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA. September 12, 2001 was the second worst day imaginable to release a project that we had all worked 6 1/2 years on and all of us feared that it was all some kind of terrible oman. Wednesday's, of course are never release days, as the industry ALWAYS releases albums on tuesdays, however at that point in our lives, there was no industry. We had showcased at SXSW before a sold out crowd, previewing our then almost completed magnum opus before a sold out crowd of industry fucks to no real avail. Folks kept coming up to us wishing us well and telling us how much they liked it, but no one was making any offers of any kind. A month or so later, we received our only bid, and it was so horrifyingly bad, that upon doing the math, I realized that we would be bankrupt within a year if we took it. (At that time all of our income was based on merch sales and the wording of that offer combined with the high wholesale price we would have paid, rendered that impossible). We turned the offer down and set out to find a way to put it out ourselves.
While raising the money from private investors (all of whom we promised to pay back in a little over a years time plus 15%) I also booked our fall tour, 75 shows in 90 days. The first booking was to be in Murfreesboro TN on Wednesday September 12th. We were hoping to have the CDs pressed, artwork printed and all of the package put together in time. My sister took the artwork that Wes Freed did, compiled it with the art of the other contributors (Felicia Graham, Patrick Hood, Byron Wilkes AKA Rev. Rex Ubu, Jeff Owens, and Kathleen Judge), designed the package and hired the printers and the folks who actually put the discs in the cover and shrink wrap them. On monday the 10th, Lilla called me to tell me I could pick them up in Birmingham on Wednesday.
On Tuesday the 11th,, we were all glued to the TV all day like most Americans, terrified of what was happening and trying to reach friends in NYC to make sure they were all OK. The next day we had to decide whether there would be a show or not. The club informed us that they would be open regardless, as folks were starting to come out for a much needed drink and diversion. I think we were all feeling the same way, so we headed north and spent the next three months or so touring the eastern half of our beautiful shellshocked country.
Its been five years, three more albums and countless tours since then. We leave this Thursday for the fall leg of our latest tour. The band has never played better (or even as well) as right now and this one is putting us in some amazing great rooms in some of our favorite towns.
Tonight, I will get to warm up with a set of REM covers at at local tribute / benefit for Community Connection. The show is sold out, and with rumors abounding of some of Athens finest showing up, I have to admit to a few nerves. (I don't mean the Police Department).
In early October, during our week off, I am playing two solo shows with all proceeds going to MUSICKFEST BENEFIT. ( http://www.myspace.com/musickfest). Our good friend Wendy Musick plays guitar with Southern Bitch and Kimberly Morgan and the Everlovin Band. During an emergency appendectomy this summer, it was discovered that Wendy had a lemon sized tumor on her pancreas. Wendy is a very talented musician, sound engineer, and a very dear friend who, like the majority of Americans nowadays, has no health insurance, which can easily translate to "shit out of luck" in the bottom line obsessed healthcare industry. The shows are on Thursday October 5th at 40 Watt Club and Friday October 6th at Nuci's Space (both in Athens GA). In addition to the shows, there will also be an art auction at Flicker Theatre (opening reception Wednesday October 27th). The response from local artists has been incredible (everyone asked has said yes and donations are already coming in) and the art work I have seen so far is just truly amazing. Wendy is very loved in this community, and anyone who has ever met her knows exactly why, as she is truly one of the most special people I have ever met. Please visit the myspace site and read more about this event and the updates on Wendy's situation.
DBT will be announcing our annual NUCI'S SPACE BENEFIT in the next couple of weeks. (Word is already leaking, but I'm still ironing out a few last details before making official announcement).
I hope to be posting some writings here, as well as keeping a blog for Gibson.com
Talk to you soon. Have a great and safe fall and see you at The Rock Show. Patterson Hood Drive-By Truckers
Now from Youtube some live Drive-By Truckers from Southern Rock Opera too enjoy. Here is "Dead, Drunk And Naked"
I was going to I Am Fuel, You Are Friends today to check out the excellent Monday wrap-up Heather does and came across her excellent tribute to the events of today. There's not much anyone can say but their own personal experience with it and here's mine.
The thing I remember most was how surreal it was for me. I was in the middle of doing my old radio show. We had a stereo in the station lobby and I noticed that someone had changed the station. I went out there and told them that they can't do that and they told me that something was happening in New York.
So I put the next song on and went back out to try and hear what was going on. So I get some kind of idea (bad but not even close to the scale that it was) and I was talking to a friend online. Trying to find any type of news on any website to find out more. Every type of news outlet was flooded and wouldn't load up.
I finished my show. Went to the pub on campus and then just began to get the scope of what was going on. I remember the silence. Tons of people just sitting around watching CNN.
In a statement that is both ineloquent and also understated; it's still the most fucked up thing I've ever seen in my life and hope to ever see.
I Am Fuel sums it up much better then me and so I encourage you to read her take on it and some of the musical response to it here.
Although I'll share with you the highlight of the post for me, Bruce Springsteen's version of "My City Of Ruins" from the tribute special. Today is the first time I've seen it since it's original airing and I've watched it a few times today and it gives me chills everytime. Thank goodness for YouTube so that moments like these can live on.
Well the unnamed music festival that I talked about before, now has a name. The P.A. Music Festival is named after the two venues, Phog Lounge and The Avalon Front, as well as the public address system that bands have to use.
The quick details of the festival are two clubs, four bands a night, $10 a night or $25 for the whole weekend and you will have the option to go back and forth between clubs (depending on capacity).
I'm sure people are sick of me talking about The Bicycles by now, but that's too bad. Why so much talk, well their album, The Good The Bad And The Cuddly, is very good and live they are amazing and full of fun.
Playing with Henri Faberge And The Adorables at Phog here in Windsor I could see why the album is doing so well on the Canadian campus radio charts since its release. Most of the show had eight people up on stage with many tambourine solos. Lots of fun and definitely recommended if you can get a chance to see them.
Anyways after the show, drummer/singer Dana Snell was kind enough to do the Sweet Static Grand Slam.
1-Who is your favorite Muppet?
Animals
2-What is your favorite band or artist that no one knows about?
4-Name three songs you'd put on a mix tape for a significant other.
1-Local Rabbits-"Never Had To Fight" 2-Nick Drake-"One Of These Things First" 3-Some obscure rocking song like Heart's "Magic Man" or "Crazy On You"
Since I've already posted The Bicycles songs you can download from their website in a previous post, I'll point out that they have a couple of different songs up on their Myspace page that you can stream. Also there is some live clips of them up on YouTube so enjoy them.
The band was greatly reduced from their normal eight or so players as only three came down. But members of The Bicycles jumped in and it was a great show. Lots of fun and a killer cover of The Constantine's "On To You" (my favorite song of their's) Front man Henri Faberge himself, was kind enough to take some time out to do the Sweet Static Grand Slam.
1-Who is your favorite Muppet?
If you are in Toronto next weekend, September 16, make sure you hit their cd release show at Palais Royale. A stacked line-up that includes The Bicycles, The Barmitzvah Brothers, Gentleman Reg and more. For full details go here.
Even though the NFL started Thursday, I'm not offically into football mode until today when Buffalo Bills get started. So far football has actually been pretty decent for me what with my two favorite college teams, Michigan State and the University of Windsor, going undefeated and the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders having an ok year as well.
But like I said it doesn't officially start until my Bills play against New England this afternoon. So with this in mind here is Adam Sandler's "The Lonesome Kicker" to help you get ready for this afternoon.
You can listen to Sweet Static, every Friday from 10:30am to noon on 91.5 FM in Windsor/Detroit. Or you can tune in on the internet at -http://cjam.ca, under listen or -opening a url on whatever player you use and put in http://137.207.3.11:8050/
New and improved broadband stream from the station, as well as the original lo-fi stream.
The show is archived for a month at http://web2.uwindsor.ca/cjam/nvd_mp3.php with a new, easier to navigate layout.
Apparently the archives are down so unfortunately no chance to check out the show. Thanks to Andrew Scott of The Bicycles for calling in for an interview for their show tonight. Check out the previous post on The Bicycles for music from them.
Time for a brand new feauture for Sweet Static. Back a few years ago I used to do a 'zine called These Are Rotten Apples. The main feature was called "6 Questions With..." where I would ask six stupid/weird/unusual questions. The reason would be so that the artist would have something different to answer instead of the usual stuff. Also it's way easier to write down the answers to these types of questions since they are usually short and that's good especially when you're normally in a bar.
Anyway I have decided to bring back the idea but to modify it a bit. So now it will be known as the Sweet Static Grand Slam. Why the Grand Slam? Well I've shortened it to four questions and that was the only thing I could think of to do with the number four.
So last night I had the pleasure of seeing Geoff Berner and Wax Mannequin at the Phog Lounge here in Windsor. I met Geoff the last time he was in town and he's a great guy with a lot of great stories to tell.
He's been tourning his last album, The Whiskey Rabbi, for close to a couple of years now and in October is planning to start work on a new record, which is to be released on Jericho Beach Music. Right now he's in the middle of a tour across Canada to promote his new booklet, "How To Be An Accordion Player" before heading back over to Europe to tour with Kaizers Orchestra
So with that here is the first edition of the Sweet Static Grand Slam with Geoff Berner.
This weekend in Chicago is a series of shows to celebrate Touch and Go Record's 25th anniversary. Of course one of the big draws for the weekend is the reunion of Albini's Big Black, playing together for the first time in nineteen years.
In the interview Albini talks about why play together again and much more. Definitely worth checking out. The interview is online at the CFRU website and will be online for the next four weeks. You can click on the link below to go straight to the interview or if you want to check out the whole show you can go here and start on hour one..
Well Polaris Prize-mania is in full swing as the award date closes in. The Polaris award is like the Short List type award but for Canadian artists.
They have a major spread on Yahoo with links to videos and the artists' websites. You can check it out here. Also there is a non-binding fan poll. So far Sarah Harmer is winning after 754 votes. Broken Social Scene is a close second and The New Pornographers are third.
In advance of the show, if everything goes according to plan, I'll be interviewing someone from The Bicycles on the radio version of Sweet Static this Friday sometime between 10:30 am and noon EST. You can listen in on the CJAM website.
For those of you who don't know The Bicycles have been together for about five years but just released their first album this summer. The result was The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly and it has been near the top of the Canadian campus radio charts since being released. I haven't had the opportunity to sit down and listen to the whole album but the songs I've played on the show have been great. Pure, catchy pop that you can't ignore.
I mentioned in my Anti-Hit List review for August 19, that The Polyphonic Spree cover of Nirvana's "Lithium" was floating around. However the mp3 blog it was at, Don't Need Anything had removed the file.
Since then though it has popped up again. I saw that it was up on Hype and I was able to download it from Muzak For Cybernetics. I checked there today and it's bandwith had been exceeded. Another mp3 blog, this one in French, Un violon, un jambon, has posted it as well.
Well since it should get out there since it's an amazing song, I put it up myself. So I uploaded it to Rapidshare, unzipped (since it's only one song and honestly I forgot). To click on the link below and you too can enjoy it. And don't forget to get the ep, Wait, coming out next week that the song will be on.
Well Zunior has put this month's free compilation. As always lots of great stuff on it. Here is the track listing
1 Flower Gardens - Chad VanGaalen Skelliconnection Flemish Eye Records 2 On The Rails - Jerk With A Bomb Pyrokenisis Scratch Records 3 I Live In A Loft Like An Osprey - Orillia Opry Pandion Haliaetus Ships At Night Records 4 Old Blue Carpet - Selina Martin Life Drawing Without Instruction Selina Martin 5 Old Blue Carpet - Jill Barber A Note To Follow So Dependent Music 6 Hanasakajijii (One: The Angry Neighbor)- Anathallo Floating World Nettwerk Records 7 Whiskey Rabbi - Geoff Berner Whiskey Rabbi Black Hen Records 8 One in Six Children Will Flee in Boats - Frog Eyes The Golden River Global Symphonic Records 9 Orange Car Crash - As The Poets Affirm The Jaws That Bite, The Claws That Catch Zunior Music 10 Here You Are, Hated - Fond Of Tigers A Thing To Live With Drip Audio Records
You can't complain when you something free off the brand new Chad VanGaalen record. Other favorites of mine on here include Geoff Berner, Selina Martin and Orillia Opry.
Well I'm all moved and stuff so hopefully the posting will be a bit more regular here. Going to start with the brand new Anti-Hit List from John Sakamoto.
Going to start out with music from The Stroke's Albert Hammond, Jr. and his solo record. Sakamoto compares it to, "like a cross between 'The Kids Are Alright'-era Who and the hook-filled melancholy of Fountains of Wayne" He also calls it inconclusive and I agree. I'd like to hear more. You can stream three songs on his Myspace page.
Up next is Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta! A six piece the song Sakamoto points out, "Lions For Scottie" is a nice pop song but also with some strings. I also like the song, "Red Confederates, Red Confessions". Starts out slow and then half way picks up the speed before slowing down again. You can download them from their homepage. Hey Rosetta!-"Lions For Scottie" Hey Roseeta!-"Red Confederates, Red Confessions"
Lastly is a reissue of an album by Noel Ellis. Coming from Lights In The Attic label that issued the excellent compilation Jamaica to Toronto earlier this year. Originially released in 1983 Ellis is the son of reggae legend Alton Ellis. You can stream four great songs at the myspace page they set up.
As a bonus the Light In The Attic website has an mp3 from the Jamaica to Toronto: Soul, Funk & Reggae 1967-1974 album. I played this song on my radio show and it's really, really good.
You can listen to Sweet Static, every Friday from 10:30am to noon on 91.5 FM in Windsor/Detroit. Or you can tune in on the internet at -http://cjam.ca, under listen or -opening a url on whatever player you use and put in http://137.207.3.11:8050/
New and improved broadband stream from the station, as well as the original lo-fi stream.
Hopefully next week an interview with The Bicycles.
as always...
