Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Free Music In Detroit-CityFest

Being right across the river from Detroit is a good thing for a music fan. Most bands hit the city at some point, so you've usually got a chance to see any act you want to catch. Another excellent thing is the huge amount of free festivals in the summer. Over the next couple of days I'm going to go over some of the ones I'm excited about.

First up today is CityFest formerly known as TasteFest, running from July 4-8. It's at New Center in Detroit and offers four stages of music. They usually have some pretty sweet bands and this year is no different. A weird mix of bands from the Afrobeat of Femi Kuti to the comedy of Weird Al to indie favs Yo La Tengo and Spoon.

Here is the main stage listings

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007
5:30 PM
Femi Kuti and The Positive Force
8:30 PM
SPOON

Thursday, July 5th, 2007
5:30 PM
The Wailers
8:30 PM
“Weird Al” Yankovic

Friday, July 6th, 2007
5:30 PM
BRIAN CULBERTSON reunited with Steve Cole
7:30 PM
The Detroit News Battle of the Bands Winner
The Displays
8:30 PM
Lupe Fiasco

Saturday, July 7th, 2007
5:30 PM
Deniece Williams
8:30 PM
Yo La Tengo

Sunday, July 8th, 2007
3:00 PM
Bobby “Blue” Bland
6:00 PM
Cheap Trick

Plus there are three other stages of local bands.

For full details on CityFest go here.

The Old Soul

The Old Soul is a Toronto band. Really great, energetic stuff. Anyways, Friendly Fire Records has released, from the best that I can see, a compilation of their two previous releases. Looks like a mix of the two Canadian records for the U.S. One of my favorite bands from the last couple of years, both live and recorded so definitely check them out. Friendly Fire has a couple of mp3s up and the retro-tinged video from "River Of Daughters" is up on You Tube.

Fembots & Nathan Lawr In Windsor

Sorry for the lack of updates this week. Just been in one of those moods and not into blogging much. Going to correct that though.

Tomorrow night at Phog Lounge in Windsor is what should be an incredible show as the Fembots and Nathan Lawr perform. Only thing that sucks is that Luke Doucet is playing the same night at The Avalon Front. If I had my way I'd hit both shows but unfortunately I have to choose one and I go with Fembots/Lawr. Honestly you can't go wrong with either show.

Anyways a couple of songs from the Fembots and videos to try and persuade everyone in the area to go.

Around The Blogs

Haven't done this in a long time, but there's been some really kick ass stuff lately and thought I'd point out the way.

-Good Hodgkins has a CBC session of Final Fantasy and Cadence Weapon performing together. Some really great stuff in it. Check it out here.
-Speaking of Final Fantasy, B(oot)Log has a recording of a show from a month ago in Kingston. Interesting set list and includes a John Cale cover, so head over and check it out.
-Over at i (heart) music they have a live Rhume show to celebrate Kelpmitzvah. Definitely worth grabbing so get it here.

As always all blogs on the side are highly recommended by myself to check out.
