Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

RIP James Brown

Of course everyone is coming out with their James Brown tributes and rightfully so. Now it's my turn.

My first real James Brown exposure was from Rocky IV with "Coming To America". You had to love the defeating of the evil Dolph Lundgren (well at least when you're 12 or so). Later I'd remember "Sex Machine" always playing at the disco/funk night at the bar.

The favorite James Brown memory though was Eddie Murphy doing James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub on Saturday Night Live. I had the old video tape of his best on SNL and right away this grabbed my attention. So thanks to the joys of You Tube, I can share this with everyone (or at least until NBC yanks it).

A Blast From The Past

I always loved this song. Not sure if I can embed Myspace videos here but hopefully.

A Barmitvah Christmas

Hope everyone is having a good holidays. Mine is pretty good. Really quiet which is nice. Just spending some time watching tv, dvds I've been meaning to watch and hanging out with friends. Anyways I promised a Christmas post and here it is.

Guelph's The Barmitzvah Brothers are one of my favorite bands. Really eclectic stuff that's a whole lot of fun, especially live. Well back in 2004 they release a Christmas album. I've taken my three favorite songs from it to share. The three songs are...

-"Surprise!"
-"Jimmy And Dorothy Part 1"
-"They Used To Call Him Santa"

As usual the songs are in a zip file together and available from Rapidshare.

Interview With Richard Laviolette Online

The guest last week on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show from CFRU, was Guelph's Richard Laviolette. He has a new album out which is pretty good (the little bit I've played on my radio show) called, a little less like a rock, a little more like home, on Burnt Oak Records. Not only was it an interview but also a live performance.

Interview with Richard Laviolette.

The interview will be up for another 3 weeks roughly.

Rock Plaza Central Covers Justin Timberlake

Well Pitchfork keeps up the Rock Plaza Central love. They pointed out that Cokemachineglow has a podcast coming up featuring a ton of covers. One of them being Rock Plaza Central covering Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back".

Main force behind Rock Plaza Central, Chris Eaton, even uploaded the song to the band's Myspace page. Apparently though Myspace wasn't too pleased with this. He said in a post;

"Sorry if anyone wondered what happened to the Rock Plaza Central song on their page. We tried to upload a fun copy of Justin Timberlake's Sexy Back on our page, and Myspace quickly swooped in, blocking access to all the rest of our songs, too. Isn't that crazy?

Anyway, so we've deleted Sexy Back and will replace it with some other song of ours. Maybe we'll even change everything. But please return and reclaim the song you had. It is yours whenever you want it, no matter what Roooopert might say."

He went on to apologize for breaking Myspace. Apparently cover songs aren't cool with Myspace. It's a really fun version though and definitely recommended.

To read the whole article and to get the link to download the song go here.

Sweet Static Update

Been slowing down a bit here with the holidays coming up. Couple of things I'm hoping to get going though this week include...

-A Christmas mix of some stuff I have that I haven't seen around.
-My best of the year list. I normally hold it off until the beginning of January for the radio show but why bother waiting, especially with everyone else getting their list out. So I've been relistening to a lot of stuff and narrowing it down and in the next couple of days you will see the Sweet Static Baker's Dozen Top Thirteen albums of 2006.

Hope everyone is good and safe. Thanks,
Mike

A Stephen Colbert Christmas

That's right. It is that time of the year and the man himself Stephen Colbert has issued a challenge. He was upset over hearing John Lennon and his hippie peace agenda ruining Christmas music for him. He then claimed that he never sang his Christian beliefs into Beatles songs...until now.

He then issued a challenge to mash up Christmas songs and The Beatles' White Album to create The White Christmas Album.

Thanks to the good people at the No Fact Zone, I've was able to find a link to the first such reaction to challenge. Twenty five songs of Beatles and Christmas mashed up glory including "While My Reindeer Gently Weeps", "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Parum Pa Pum Pum", "Martha, I'm Dreaming of a Vanilla-White Christmas" and of course "Santa Claus is Coming to Town with a Warm Gun".

All kidding aside it's a pretty decent collection. Some are pretty rough and some are really good. Not sure if any more songs will come up but hopefully.

To download The White Chrismas Album (and to stand up for truthiness everywhere) go here.

Truthiness forever.

Around The Blogs

Haven't done this feature in a while but thought I'd bring it back to highlight some stuff I've found the last few days.

-B(oot)Log has a concert from Guelph's Habitat (a side project of Dubervilles and The Barmitzvah Brothers) from Kingston.
-The Habitat post led to me Mocking Music. There I found a concert from The Hold Steady from Ottawa. Fifteen song show, fits on one cd. What more can you ask for. To check it out go here.
-Heather over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends, has a very interesting post where all the Pearl Jam Christmas singles are posted. Songs are available individually or as a big zip file. Lots of interesting looking covers there (downloaded it but haven't listened to it yet) including Elvis, Jackson 5ive, Ramones and more. Go here to grab it for yourself.
-Lastly I have to give some props to a good friend Michael and his blog, Radio Free Canuckistan. No music here but lots of great stuff from the little bit I've been able to check out. He writes for a lot of great publications like Eye and Exclaim and here he puts up his full interviews for the articles he does. So far he's posted stuff on Dave Bidini, Spiral Beach, Sloan, Beirut and many more. He's always been a favorite writer of mine so the chance to get his raw materials is pretty sweet to me.

Alright off to get some sleep before I have to go back to the real world. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up this feature since I've always enjoyed it. Back tonight hopefully or tomorrow at the latest with the Canadian campus radio charts and a link for an interview with Ron Sexsmith.
