Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Name:
Location: Windsor, Ont, Canada

Sweet Static is an mp3 blog that allows me to share the music I love and also to point out other cool things around the internet that catch my attention. It is also a place where I can talk about my radio show by the same name, now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on CJAM 91.5 FM in Windsor, Ontario. Got something I should hear? Email me at sweetstatic @ gmail.com. All comments left here are emailed to my inbox, so you can get a hold of me that way also. You can also follow the show/me on twitter at sweetstaticcjam.

Rock Plaza Central Session Online

I've never heard of Daytrotter but really wish I had before today. Got a message of a new blog post from Rock Plaza Central on Myspace. So checked it out and found out that the band did a session for Daytrotter when they toured in the States last month. The session is pretty sweet, has four songs and includes a cover of the Rheostatics "Record Body Count" and the unreleased "Stereo Trucks" which I love and heard from a demo CD I got previously.

To check out the whole Rock Plaza Central Daytrotter session go here.

As extra here's the new video for "Anthem For The Already Defeated"

Lastly since I thought it disappeared on Youtube (although it's there now), here is the mash up of the Rock Plaza Central's "Sexy Back" with the Justin Timberlake video.

First Official Hillside List Of Bands Announced

Well I had just finished a new post for the another Hillside band when I saw Ani DiFranco listed on Pollstar. Then I thought I'd check over at the official site before posting it and saw that they had announced a few bands on Friday. So here is the first official list of bands and some dates.

-Ani Difranco (Sunday evening)
-The Dears (Saturday)
-Chumbawumba Acoustic (Friday)
-Alejandro Escovedo (Sunday)
-Do Make Say Think (Saturday)
-Mad Violet
-Blackie and the Rodeo Kings
-Martin Sexton
-Ron Sexsmith
-Shout Out Out Out Out
-Memphis
-Akron/Family
-Apostle of Hustle

The only band listed here previously not on the official list is Mother Mother.

It's nice that they've put the list out but I will admit that it takes a lot of the fun away from the search.

Tomorrow Night in Windsor-The Superfantastics and The Silt

Really interesting show tomorrow night in Windsor at Phog. I've talked about The Silt with my interview with Doug Tielli of the band so now I'll focus on the other band, Halifax's The Superfantastics.

I've only heard a few songs but really catchy stuff. Not sure how much of the show I'll be able to catch (too many plans for the day and night) but hopefully I'll be able to see some. Anyways they have three songs up on their web page so check it out. To get you started here's a song I played today on the show.

More Post-Rheostatics Stuff

Some more stuff in the wake of the last Rheostatics show.

-T to the J to the O has a nice write-up on the last show.
-Blog TO also has a collection of memories and thoughts on the band collected here.
-Over at Write About Here, there is also a good review of the show.
-Good. Gone. Dead. continues to be the ultimate source for all things regarding the last days of the band. Biggest highlight being a soundboard recording of the second last show of the band from the Horseshoe. Go here for full details and download.
-CBC has it's recording of the final Rheo show, one on Radio 3 and one on Radio 2. It's not the full show but of course top notch quality. Good. Gone. Dead. has 2 audience recordings of the show and the promise of a soundboard but nothing yet.

Lots of personal stuff in the highlight. Honestly that's one of the important draws to the band (to me personally) is the connection fans (myself included) feel to the band. Speaking of personal, my own post that I've promised is coming along but very slowly. But I'm putting my foot in my mouth and promising it this week since I want to get it done.

Changes In Drive-By Truckers

Well Jason Isbell is no longer in Drive-By Truckers. The two announcements online yesterday seem to paint different pictures.

On the Truckers website Patterson Hood has a long message about the split. He calls it, "extremely amicable" and credits the change to "a period of personal and artistic growth from all sides which has left us with differing dreams and goals." He goes on to wish him well and talking about Truckers news, including them going into the studio for their next album, tour plans and that founding member John Neff would be returning to the band full-time.

On Jason's Myspace page is two blog entries. One at 6pm that says "I am not in the Drive By Truckers anymore. Go figure. I wish them luck. I will not answer questions about it." Then a second one at 8pm "If I could change it...I would."

Be interesting to see if anything comes out of this. I could sit around and try to guess but I'd just be full of crap. I will say that it's really too bad that they're going separate ways. They were really incredible together. That being said I'm a big fan and can't wait to see the directions that two go in now.

For the record Jason Isbell's record, Sirens Of The Ditch, comes out on New West Records in July.

Sad Kermit

I was watching CBC tonight and found this brilliant video. It's unfortunate that more hasn't been said about the sad state that everyone's good friend Kermit has been in. From his website

"Soon after the death of Jim Henson, Sad Kermit the Frog turned to a life full of drugs, alcohol and sex. His fall to rock-bottom was quick and unrelenting. These songs document Sad Kermit's pain during these years...and years to come."

Sad Kermit-"Hurt"

Some brilliant people have too much free time.

Interview With Dave Ullrich Online

I've put the link up to my show earlier but didn't point out the interview with Zunior's Dave Ullrich. The interview starts about 26 minutes into the hour and includes talk about Zunior, the making of the Rheostatics tribute album, The Secret Sessions, his memories of the Rheostatics and his musical project Egger.

More On Life After The Rheos

More and more Rheostatic stuff to check out.

Darrin from the Rheostatics Live website has also started a site dedicated to the end of the band. Good Gone Dead is collecting anything and everything from the last week of shows and everything after.

Over at radio free canuckistan, Michael Barclay's review is up. A must read for any fan. You can read his thoughts on the last three Rheo shows here.

The Globe And Mail had a write-up from Dave Bidini on the last show. Very nice and definitely worth checking out. To see's Dave's article go here.

Zunior had a free mash up from The Golden Seals called RHEOVOLVER.

The Golden Seals-RHEOVOLVER

Lastly I'm in the middle of writing my Rheostatic post. Hopefully going to knock it out in the next day or so. Just not used to writing something like this (it's been a bit) so it's a little slow coming.
