Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

The 2008 Sweet Static Baker's Dozen

Another year has come and gone and despite my erratic posting tendencies another edition of the Sweet Static Baker's Dozen is here. This is not the best or greatest albums of the year. These are the albums that I found myself going back to over and over.

As in every other year on my radio show I will be playing a song from each album and then uploading the entire playlist as a zip file. The link for that is at the end. For now though in alphabetical order are my favorite albums of 2008.

Write ups coming soon. Just wanted the list of albums (and songs played on the show) online.

The Awkward Stage-Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights
-Mini Skirt Of Xmas Lights

Jason Collett-Stay Positive
-Out Of Time

Death Cab For Cutie-Narrow Stairs
-Long Division

The Felice Brothers-The Felice Brothers
-Frankie's Gun

Flight Of The Conchords-Flight Of The Conchords
-Bowie

Hilotrons-Happymatic
-Emergency Street

The Hold Steady-Stay Positive
-Slapped Actress

The Magic-EP
-Never Lock the Door

Mother Mother-O My Heart
-Arms Tonite

My Morning Jacket-Evil Urges
-Highly Suspicious

Ra Ra Riot-The Rhumb Line
-Dying Is Fine

She & Him-Volume One
-This Is Not A Test

Vampire Weekend-Vampire Weekend
-One (Blake's Got A New Face)

To download the entire 2008 Sweet Static's Baker's Dozen click here.

I had a bit of extra time so I also played Jenny Omnichord-Charlotte Or Otis from Charlotte Or Otis: An Album Of Duets which I loved but just didn't make the list.

I'm Digging Tusks

One of the things I enjoy about doing my radio show live is the ability to check out a great deal more music then when I'm recording.

Take last week when I was doing my final Friday broadcast I found the EP from Toronto's Tusks. I had read a review and was interested in checking it out. So I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it.

I definitely recommend checking it out. Their label White Whale has a sample mp3 available from their self-titled EP. Here's the link below.

Ruth Minnikin Playing In Windsor This Friday

A show that I'm really excited about seeing happens this Friday at Phog in Windsor as Ruth Minnikin is coming to town. She'll be joined on the bill by Ron Leary, Reels and The Good Lovelies.

I was first introduced to her when she played in The Guthries and their album Off Windmill remains a favorite of mine to this day. To be honest I haven't really checked out much of her solo stuff other then the album Marooned and Blue but I've always liked her voice. I'm really looking forward to the show.

Here's a song courtesy of her Sonic Bids website

Flight Of The Conchords

I have a confession to make. I was slow and I can't believe how slow I was. Flight Of The Conchords have been around for a bit but I've only got into them in the last couple of weeks. I love this band and the show. Like I said I'm coming to this late but I still wanted to share it.

Here are a couple of videos, first for one of my favorite songs, "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)"

Next their great hip hop song, "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros"

And of course Sub Pop is always good about putting up mp3s to sample so here is one from them.

Culture Reject

Hopefully this doesn't come across as overkill with two posts in one day.

I've always been a big fan of Black Cabbage, a band from Guelph from the '90s. Their time came and went but at the end of last year a group on Facebook was dedicated to hoping the band would reunite for a show and word came that they would be performing at Hillside this year.

Also appearing there will be one of Black Cabbage's main members, Michael O'Connell's new project Culture Reject. The album is out on White Whale Records and is another one I've really gotten into since I've first heard it.

I'm trying to get into Hillside this year as a volunteer and if I'm fortunate enough to be picked I'll definitely be checking out both Black Cabbage and Culture Rejects if possible. Here's a taste of the band from the White Whale website.

Hilotrons

Well, it's been a long time since I've posted and got a lot of stuff that has peaked my interest the last few months. No promises on how often the posts will come but I'm going to try and revive this.

First off is Ottawa's Hilotrons. I caught them at Phog Lounge in Windsor back in April. They're on Kelp Records, so I was immediately interested. I checked out the album and to be honest, I wasn't too crazy about them right away.

However I was soon to be proven wrong by their live performance. It was an amazing, high energy show. If you get the chance to see them make sure you try and get out to see them. A couple of songs via the Kelp records website to give you a taste.

Jim Guthrie

I woke up this morning to one of my favorite Jim Guthrie songs playing on my computer, "1901". So it got me wondering what is up with him lately. His last proper release came out in 2003 so I'm definitely ready for some new music. No news on his website and his Wikipedia page says he's working on an album hopefully out late in 2007, but who knows how reliable that info is. The bottom line is that I have no clue what's going on with him.

So anyways with all that I did see that there's a lot of cool stuff on his website to download (solo, Royal City, Mandrills) and since I mentioned "1901" I'll point out this short, remix of the song by i am robot and proud.

Revisiting Feist's Monarch aka Post 504

It has been a week since I started things up again and so far so good. A funny thing happened though when I was doing a post and had realized that I had passed post number 500. I'm kind of stunned that I've kept this up for that long. Usually I get distracted or tired of it and give up things, which has happened a couple of times. Yet somehow I keep coming back and posting.

So in honour of reaching 500 posts I've decided to go back to the well with what has easily been my most popular post. Back in April of 2006 I did a post with three songs from Feist's debut album Monarch. I also passed a full copy of the album over to Heather at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends and she put it up. Her links are no longer up and I've gotten a couple of requests for it since then and since the album is still not available commercially I thought I'd put it up again.

So as usual, on the link below is a zipped copy of it from Rapidshare.

To get Feist's Monach go here.

Hope you enjoy.
