Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Name:
Location: Windsor, Ont, Canada

Sweet Static is an mp3 blog that allows me to share the music I love and also to point out other cool things around the internet that catch my attention. It is also a place where I can talk about my radio show by the same name, now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on CJAM 91.5 FM in Windsor, Ontario. Got something I should hear? Email me at sweetstatic @ gmail.com. All comments left here are emailed to my inbox, so you can get a hold of me that way also. You can also follow the show/me on twitter at sweetstaticcjam.

More Rheostatics Links And Don't Forget Dave Ullrich Interview Today

Well today is the big day. The final Rheostatics show tonight at Massey Hall. A few more interesting stuff has popped up around the internet.

Over at radio free canuckistan, the last two installments are up of the excerpts from Have Not Been The Same. Also there are interviews with Dave Bidini from the end of last year, which I mentioned before but not as much as I thought I had. Anyways they're definitely worth looking at go into the ending of the band. All the links below

-Have Not Been The Same part 3
-Have Not Been The Same part 4
-Dave Bidini interview part 1
-Dave Bidini interview part 2

Eye Magazine also had a really nice write up, basically an obituary for the band as well as words of appreciation from some famous friends and fans including Feist, Justin Rutledge, Hawksley Workman and John Southworth.

-Part one is the write up
-Part two is the testimonials

Lastly don't forget that Dave Ullrich of Zunior will call in on today's radio edition of the show to talk about The Secret Sessions: Rheostatics Tribute. It will happen around 11am EST. You can listen in live at the CJAM website.

To get you in the mood enjoy this Inbreds classic.

The Inbreds-Round 12 (Live, Calgary 2/97)

As for Rheostatics posts there will probably only be one or maybe two more from me. Probably a post-show wrap up and then one last big, personal one.

The Besnard Lakes In Windsor This Friday

While part of me wishes I was in Toronto this Friday, I am happy that there are a couple of kick ass shows in Windsor.

Current buzz band, The Besnard Lakes, will be playing at The Avalon Front along with The Golden Hands Before God Conducts Incredible Magic Band & The Spirits. There's another show that I'm considering going to (will post on that later) but this should be an amazing show.

To get you into the mood here's a track from The Besnard Lakes album Are The Dark Horse

Interview With D.A. Pennebaker Online

This week the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show had a second guest (besides Dave Bidini) as filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker joined them. They discussed his 1965 Bob Dylan documentary, Bob Dylan Don’t Look Back, which has just been released on DVD as a deluxe edition.

The interview will be archived for the next thirty days and starts right after the news.

I am happy to announce that this week's radio editon of Sweet Static, which I previously announced would be an all Rheostatics tribute, will also have a live interview with Dave Ullrich.

The interview will take place around 11am EST on CJAM 91.5 in Windsor/Detroit. Sweet Static runs from 10:30 to noon and can be streamed online at the CJAM website.

Interview With Dave Bidini Online

Today's Rheostatic Post

Wednesday is my really busy day (in real life) so probably not too much today Rheostatic-wise. Today some links to great stuff on the internet.

In honour of the last Rheostatics show, CBC has a a photo gallery up with some great pictures of the band spanning the years. Definitely worth seeing and you can check it out here.

For a comprehensive history of the band (well comprehensive up to 2001) you can see Exclaim Magazine's Timeline story here.

Lastly I'm going to point the way to one of my favorite articles of the band of all time. It was originally printed in ID Magazine from 1999 by Michael Barclay of radio free canuckistan. I have a whole bunch of articles I kept over the years and started a website to put them up (Rheostatics Media Archive). I stopped putting stuff up (as well as collecting them). Maybe I'll go back some day and put new stuff up. For now though you should read "License To Confuse" here.

Hopefully more later today (the very least the link to the Dave Bidini interview from CFRU)

Rheostatics-Realtime Session (CBC-1997)

Back again today with one of my favorite Rheostatics shows ever. But first over at radio free canuckistan, part two of the Have Not Been The Same excerpt has been posted along with a review of the Rheostatics show in Waterloo from Sunday. You can read part two right here.

Now a few words on the Realtime session from March of 1997. Realtime was one of the many shows CBC Stereo (later to be known as CBC 2) would use on Saturday night to try and get young people to watch. In 1997, during Canadian Music Week they invited the Rheostatics to do an hour and they in turn brought some of their friends. Those friends would include Kevin Hearn, Tamara Williamson, Gordon Downie, Guh and Ron Sexsmith.

The session was amazing. Some surprising choices ("Onilley's Strange Dream" for sure) and great collaborations. I used to have this on tape but misplaced it over the years. Thankfully it was put up on the Rheostatics Live Archive and I've been able to enjoy it once again. Now is your chance to get this show that is highly recommended.

Here's the set list for the show.

01. Intro 0:57
02. Bad Time To Be Poor 4:10
03. Morotino 4:26
04. R.D.A. 3:28
05. Banter 1:11
06. Sweet Rich Beautiful Mine 5:35
07. Every Irrelevance 4:56
08. Something To Cry About 5:22
09. Take Me In Your Hand 3:23
10. So Young, So Young 4:28
11. More Banter 1:02
12. Onilley's Strange Dream 6:16
13. Dopefiends And Boozehounds 8:03
14. Song Of Flight 0:51

To download the Rheostatics' Realtime Session click here.

You can also get it the Realtime session at the Rheostatics Live Archive here.

Rheostatics Week Continues

Well today a rare song, an upcoming interview and a book excerpt as the Rheostatics farewell countdown continues.

First the interview. This week on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show, Rheostatic Dave Bidini will be on talking about the last show. The interview will take place around 7:30 am this Wednesday on CFRU. I'll provide the link after the interview. For full details go here.

Next the excerpt. At radio free canuckistan, Michael Barclay has an excerpt from his amazing book he co-wrote, Have Not Been The Same, from the Rheostatics chapter. It's a four part post and part one can be seen here.

Lastly the rare song. One of the biggest Rheostatics hits would have to be "Bad Time To Be Poor". Originally on The Blue Hysteria album, it came during Mike Harris and the PC "Common Sense Revolution". People were hurting and the song struck a nerve. At the same time the Ontario government was in the middle of merging all the municipalities of Toronto into the "Mega City". Lots of people didn't like the idea and a benefit album came out to fight it, No Mega-CD, in 1997. On it was a new version of "Bad Time To Be Poor". Not really circulated much I'm sharing it here with you all. Just a straight up mp3 on YouSendIt and the link is below.

Rheostatics-"Bad Time To Be Poor" No Mega-CD version

Back tomorrow with another Rheostatics post.

Where To Find SXSW Music

Just thought I'd try to spread the word of a couple of very cool things having to do with the just past SXSW Conference. If you're like me (poor) and couldn't make it to the conference, you had to live vicariously through other sources out there. It was hectic, a lot of bands and a lot of blogs posting stuff. Well now a couple of great sites have helped to ease the confusion.

Largehearted Boy
has a page of links to live shows from SXSW, both downloadable and streams. Go here for the full list (that's updated) of acts.

A few of the listings comes from Lulla Byes. On this site they have a bunch of live recordings (going back over the years). From the 2007 SXSW I've checked out The Pippettes recording and it's really fun and recommended.

So I was checking out the Zunior page and they mentioned that a favorite of mine, The Bicycles had a new video. So I headed over to YouTube, found out that just using "The Bicycles" isn't really a good idea for a search. Eventually found the video. Glad I did. Really funny, a little disturbing but totally The Bicycles. Check it out below.

Germans

When I was doing my radio show this week I wanted to play a song from the Bellwoods compilation and decided to play a track from the Germans record. I remember seeing them posted on radio free canuckistan so thought I'd give it a try. Really enjoyed the song and ended up asking the music director if we had their album. Turns out it was right beside the Bellwoods so I played a track from it two songs later and liked it too.

So went back to canuckistan and checked out the post and the article he wrote for Eye and checked out this video for "I Am The Teacher". It's pretty sweet so thought I'd throw it up here. Really looking forward to hearing more from Germans in the near future.

New Rheostatics Tribute Album Out

Good news as some of Canada's best bands have come together to pay tribute to Canada's best band (in my opinion) the Rheostatics as their final show approaches at the end of the month.

The songs were all recorded early this year and the album is being put out on Sweet Static favorite Zunior. Here's the track listing

1. The Weakerthans - Bad Time To Be Poor from the album The Blue Hysteria
2. Stephen Stanley & Carla MacNeil - Take Me In Your Hand from the album Introducing Happiness
3. Weeping Tile with Chris Brown - Public Square from the album Greatest Hits
4. The Wooden Stars - Saskatchewan from the album Melville
5. The Inbreds - Dopefiends and Boozehounds from the album Whale Music
6. King Cobb Steelie - Seven Stars Remix a reworking of Night Of The Shooting Stars and Music Inspired By The Group Of 7
7. Barenaked Ladies with Tim Mech and Jason Plumb - Legal Age Life At The Variety Store from the album Whale Music
8. The Golden Seals - Loving Arms from the album Harmelodia
9. Cuff The Duke - Claire from the album Introducing Happiness
10. Kate Fenner and Tony Scherr - Stolen Car from the album Double Live
11. By Divine Right - Shaved Head from the album Whale Music
12. Dylan Hudecki - Satan Is The Whistler from the album Night Of The Shooting Stars
13. The Local Rabbits - Record Body Count from the album Melville

For the full official details from the Zunior site go here.

The Rugs Don't Work also has some details which you can see here.

As a huge Rheostatics fan I'm really pumped to hear this. Some notable reforming going on for the album including Weeping Tile, Local Rabbits and The Inbreds. Yes Weeping Tile reforms every year for a Christmas show but for these three bands this is the first time I've heard of them recording anything new in years.

More on this and the Rheostatics final show to come.

Lonely, Dear

Been a little slow this week posting but I figure most of the world is in Austin for SXSW (or so they'd have us believe) so not a big deal.

Just wanted to bring up another band that I've been enjoying lately. Read something about Sweeden's Lonely, Dear in Under The Radar and was intrigued. Another record that I started playing on my the radio edition of Sweet Static and have really grown to love the album. Sub Pop had really had some great albums lately and Lonely, Noir is another one of them.

The Sub Pop site has a free song up and it's probably my favorite on the album. Check it out below.

First Hillside Festival Bands Surface

One of the fun things every year is searching around the interweb and trying to see who's playing the Hillside Festival. For those who don't know, Hillside is a festival in Guelph, Ontario that really is something special. Two and a half days of music and excellent workshops that bring different types of artists together. This year the festival is on July 27, 28, 29, 2007.

As I said above, the last few years I've kept an eye on the online concert listings to get an idea of who's playing and to fill my friends in. Sometime in the last week the first two names popped up. They are...

-Blackie & The Rodeo Kings
-Do Make Say Think

Stay tuned as I'll keep an eye on this

The Last Town Chorus

Part of the fun is seeing something on a band you've never heard of before, getting interested and then finding out that they're pretty good. Allow me to mention The Last Town Chorus.

I was on Chart Magazine's website and ran across a story of them. I thought they sounded pretty interesting and checked out and did really like what I heard.

Apparently others do to since I've gotten a couple of comments about them on one of my playlist posts. Now I haven't heard the whole album, just a few songs that I've played on my show but it is really good.

Checking out their website I found these fun covers for download.

The Last Town Chorus-"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" live

The Last Town Chorus-"Modern Love" live

New Polyphonic Spree News

Thanks to the folks over at Pitchfork, news on the new Polyphonic Spree album is out. Coming in June, The Fragile Army will be out on TVT. I've heard a couple of tracks that they put on the Wait EP last year and it sounds promising.

For the whole article go here.

While poking around the official Spree site I found this mp3 for their version of "Little Boxes" from the excellent tv show Weeds.

Radio Appearance With Cadence Weapon/Interview With The Arcade Fire Online

Double the goodness this week on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show on CFRU in Guelph.

For most of the show, rapper (hopefully that's not a derogatory term) extraordinaire Cadence Weapon was a guest host. Talking about what's going on, including signing to Epitaph in the US and playing music, including some an exclusive remix he did.

At the start of the second hour they have Jeremy Gara of The Arcade Fire on for an interview.

Cadence shows up around halfway through the first hour and the interview starts right after the news in hour two. They will be up for thirty days from the original broadcast date, March 6.

Hour One-Cadence Weapon guest hosts

Hour Two-Interview with Jeremy Gara (The Arcade Fire) and more Cadence Weapon

Last week on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show the guest was Craig Norris of Guelph's The Kramdens.

Jon-Rae & The River

On Tuesday when I went to get the new Arcade Fire album I also happened to grab the latest record from Jon-Rae And The River, Jon-Rae and the River Knows What You Need.

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing Joe-Rae solo opening for The Barmitzvah Brothers here in Windsor. I had really liked his 2005 album, Old Songs For The New Town. So much so it was my third favorite record of the year.

So I've been been really looking forward to the new one's release. The record came out last year but the CJAM never got a copy and I had only heard a couple of songs. I saw the record while doing a quick look after grabbing Fire's album and decided to get it.

Well I've hardly been listening to Neon Bible at all the last couple of days. Partly this is because I've been listening to the record for the last month quite a bit. Mostly though, it's because I'm really enjoying the new River album. They're on tour across Canada with The Constantines this month so check them out if you get the chance.

They have a free download on their website for you to sample yourself. It's down below.

Jon-Rae And The River-"Just One More"

Also there's an excellent article on Jon-Rae And The River from Exclaim last year go here.

Obvious Arcade Fire Post

So in case you've been asleep the last couple of months or so, The Arcade Fire's Neon Bible came out yesterday. I've been sick as hell since Friday (hence the lack of posts the last few days) but even I pulled myself out of bed to make the trip to get the album. Really enjoying the real version better then the leaked edition I didn't have (sorry any record people reading but I couldn't wait). Not sure how it'll rate with Funereal but I'm enjoying it.

A couple of things to check out Arcade Fire-wise.

-AOL has an article up by Michael Barclay of radiofreecanuckistan. You can read it here (with a promises of the unedited interviews up later).
-Idolator covered the hype with a good sense of humour. Lots of good stuff to check out on there page so just head over.

A couple of songs from the live show last month in New York. These are on You Send It for a change, so they'll be available for seven days.
