I guess this has been around for a month or so but this is the first I've seen of it. Really funny video for "Rolling With Saget" with Jamie Kennedy, Bob Saget and a couple of surprises.



Funny the whole reinvention of Saget with Aristocrats, his forthcoming penguin movie and even his appearance on Joey. Definitely no longer Full House Bob...

Sweet Static Radio Update

Just a quick news flash for the radio edition of Sweet Static. Due to work going on at the University of Windsor campus this Friday, there will be no radio show this week. Basically they're powering down the whole campus to do tests on the electrical system and from what I'm told you need this electricity thing to run the station.

Sweet Static will return next week though.

The Anti-Hit List for June 24

Back with a quick look at John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for June 24.

Just a brief look since I'm on my way to work. Also got no sound on the computer I'm using so flying blind here.

First thing to catch my eye was mention of former Wilco member Jay Bennett's pre-Wilco band Titanic Love Affair. They've got a Myspace going with some of the old songs and includes a never release cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late" I know Bennett has some more stuff up there and I really want to check it out. I loved his post-Wilco album, The Palace at 4 AM but unfortunately haven't had the chance to check out anything else.

Next is a mash-up that I really want to hear. Lenlow has taken Lou Reed, John Lennon and G Love and Special Sauce and put together "Imagine Wild Music" Sounds like it could be fun.

Zunior Free Download Of The Week

This week's free download from Zunior is from Guelph's Calyx. A band with lots of sweet lineage with it's members being in or formerly in such bands as The Barmitzvah Brothers, Nathan Coles Outfit, Black Cabbage, Corduroy Leda and The Neutron Stars, among others.

They have a new album out that's self-titled. From their bio...

The Replacements

So interrupting my NXNE reviews to put up a post on The Replacements. I picked up the new best of album, Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?, this week and been listening to it hardcore.

Now I have to admit I was really slow in getting into the band. My first exposure to the band came when I swapped mixed tapes with a girl on the Rheostatics email list that I started. This was sometime back in the mid '90s. She put "Alex Chilton" on the tape and I loved it.

I never gave them much thought though after that until 2004. In the middle of my huge love of Drive-By Truckers I read an article in Harp magazine where Patterson Hood talks about an album that influenced him. He talked about Tim. I got a friend to hook me up with a copy of the album. Of course I only listened to it a few times and never gave it much of a chance.

Then a few weeks later a bunch of us from the radio station are having some beers and this song comes on the jukebox and I love it. Ask the above mentioned friend and ask who it is and he tells me it's The Replacements and it's on the album he gave me before. The song was "Here Comes A Regular" and I went back to the album and have listened to it lots since then.

So enjoy my two favorite songs from The Replacements, "Here Comes A Regular" and "Alex Chilton" together as a zip file on Rapidshare.

NXNE part 1

Hopefully this falls under the banner of better late then never. Only two weeks late but it's never a bad thing to let people know of good music you've seen.

Hit a couple of bars the first night of NXNE. Started off at the Gladstone to see a couple of friends play, Nathan Coles Outfit and Ten Year Drought. Really nice when there is two bands you want to see playing at the same time and they're right beside each other. Wish I could of caught all of their sets but at crazy festivals you can only do so much.

From there it was over to The Boat. Really small bar, no stage and lots of buzz. I headed over there base on the recommendation of a couple of friends. Huge line when I got there but thanks to my media pass I was able to get right in. Place was packed and was a really good crowd.

Highlight of the night for me was seeing We're Marching On from Guelph. Really fun band live. Weird stuff musically but good. Great show. Curious to see how the stuff comes off live.

Also got to see The Adam Brown from Montreal. Another fun band live. They were dumb, over the top rock show and I mean that in a good way.

Nothing to download that I can find but four songs are streaming on their Myspace page.

Land of Talk was recommended to me but I only caught a couple of songs at the end of their set. Going to have to give them a listen so I can figure out what to think about them. For now you can judge for yourself.

The Anti-Hit List for June 17

As I play catch up with the regular Sweet Static features, here comes one more, John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List.

Going to start with a band called Strays Don't Sleep. Sakamoto says taht they've been called "ambient alt.country" and you can hear that on the song he points out, "For Blue Eyes". However listening to a couple of other songs from their Myspace page and they also have some poppy stuff going on.

Broken Social Scene vs. Canadian Idol Will Never End

New PAS/CAL

Ok so I lied. One more post. But it's new stuff.

I was going around checking out some of the mp3 blogs I've fallen behind on and was at one of my daily stops, Largehearted Boy for his daily recap of music news around the web, live shows on torrent and mp3s available for one and all.

Anyways he pointed the way to new music from a favorite of mine, PAS/CAL out of Detroit. They've got an album coming out later this year but to keep us busy they've put up a couple of demos.

Zunior's Free Download Of The Week

As Zunior adds more labels to the roster more different stuff comes to light that is different from what was available at the start. Initially all Canadian it's slowly branching out which can only be good for them. First it was Billy Bragg when Outside Music came aboard. Now with Scratch Records comes Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 from Iowa and their song "It Wasn't Me" from 1989.

Don't know much about the band but I'm intrigued by the sound. Definitely interesting stuff.

Up, Up And Away or NXNE Here I Come

Not up literally but up the map as I'm making preparations to head to Toronto for NXNE.

My media pass through the station came through so good things with that. Still have no idea who I'm going to go see.

I shouldn't say that. I know on Thursday I'll be seeing the Nathan Coles Outfit with a quick stop to see Windsor's Ten Year Drought.

Friday I'm probably going to be at the Horseshoe most of the night so that I can see C'Mon and White Cowbell Oklahoma.

Saturday afternoon will be the Six Shooter Records BBQ featuring Ford Pier, Selena Martin, Oh Susannah, NQ Arbuckle and more. Plus I'll be hitting a non-NXNE benefit show for Sick Kids Hospital featuring Alun Piggins.

Leaving lots of space open though so if someone recommends something to me I can go anywhere and everywhere.

The Anti-Hit List for June 3

Can't get any sound this week (the joys of campus computer labs) but I'll still point out stuff that I intend to check out on John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List.

A bunch of stuff I can't wait to check out.

Going to start with Sean Lennon. His one and only album, Into The Sun, was a favorite of mine. In September he's going to release another record called Friendly Fire. He has a song from it, "Dead Meat" up on his Myspace page (linked above). There's also a YouTube video preview for the record.



I'm really looking forward to this. Like I said I really enjoyed Into The Sun so can't wait to see what this record brings.

Up next is the Hylozoists out of Toronto. They have a new record out on Boompa. Sakamoto points out the instrumental track "If Only Your Heart Was A Major Sixth", which I assume is on their Myspace (linked above) I know a friend of mine in Toronto raves about them and she has good taste so do yourself a favor and check them out. The Boompa site has a song to download.

Hylozoists-"Straight Is The Gate"

Since I can't hear any of the music I'm going to take a pass on recommending anything else. Lennon and Hylozoists I at least know a little to talk about. The rest of the list I'm not sure although I do plan on checking out Smoosh and Hello Saferide from the description.

New Yo La Tengo/Sweet Static Update

Well I just moved which sucks for numerous reasons. Least of which is a lack of internet at the house. So needless to say updates won't be as frequent as before but hopefully the site will be still useful to some degree.

With this in mind I was just reading the latest email from Matador Records and they had this to say about the forthcoming Yo La Tengo record.

"On September 12 (September 4 in places other than North America) we'll
be releasing a new CD / double LP by a trio we've creatively nicknamed
