Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Location: Windsor, Ont, Canada

Sweet Static is an mp3 blog that allows me to share the music I love and also to point out other cool things around the internet that catch my attention. It is also a place where I can talk about my radio show by the same name, now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on CJAM 91.5 FM in Windsor, Ontario. Got something I should hear? Email me at sweetstatic @ gmail.com. All comments left here are emailed to my inbox, so you can get a hold of me that way also. You can also follow the show/me on twitter at sweetstaticcjam.

Sweet Static Update-The Essential Mike Whaley

Just a short update. I've been slacking on the site for a bit. I'm almost caught up on my playlists. If you've emailed the site I apologize for that. I'm sorting through the emails to try and find the ones from real people as opposed to the music based spam I get.

I'll be debuting a new feature in the next day or so. It will be called The Essential Mike Whaley. In it I'll go over some of my favorite songs of all time. They'll be a mix of songs that I love, songs that have personal meaning, songs that just are amazing or just make me laugh. They'll be a short paragraph on each song as well as download link for them. Probably will have two songs at a time.

That's about it. Thanks for reading, listening or just stumbling on here.

Sweet Static: The Return

I should admit that the title of this post is a bit of false advertising. Sweet Static hasn't really gone anywhere. The radio show has been buzzing along but as anyone who might happen upon the website might know, it has suffered. But this is changing. There a couple of reasons I've decided to get back to posting on here

1-I'm on a wave of inspiration from a lot of great music I've been exposed to lately.
2-So much good music coming up for me in the next few weeks. The CBC Radio 3/Phog Lounge Phog Phest is coming up, as well as another trip for me up to Guelph for the Hillside Festival.
3-I would like to considered for the jury for the Polaris Music Prize next year. For those of you who don't know, the Polaris Music Prize is the award for the best Canadian album of the year. It starts out with 185 people voting from all eligible albums and the Long List comes out with 40 albums. They then vote again from those 40 albums and it gets narrowed down to 10 albums. Those are then voted on by the 11 person Grand Jury. However I figure my radio show isn't enough to get on the jury, so I'm bring back the blog back to try and strengthen my case. I'll have more on this later, but I officially want to declare my candidacy for the 2010 Polaris Jury as of today.

That's it for now. Heading out to see Mr. Chill and Greg Cox tonight and have some stuff to do before that. Real posts begin tomorrow.

Big CJAM News

I've been lazy on doing posts other then my show's playlists (and even those have lagged) but lots have been going on at my radio home, CJAM FM in Windsor.

Late last year the CBC approached the station, wanting to take over our frequency, which they can do since we didn't have protected status. They did say there was a frequency available that would fit our needs. So off the station went and applied for the new frequency and after being approved on a technical basis, today the CRTC approved the move officially. Sometime in the future CJAM will move down the dial from 91.5 FM to 99.1 FM. Same name, same website. Full details are available on the website by clicking here.

Also it's that time of the year again, the annual CJAM awards, The Jammies. Lots of categories and all of your favorite shows are nominated. Voting closes on April 15th so don't wait too long to vote.

I'm off to do my show now but I'm going to get back to posting. Seen some really great shows lately (Ford Pier, United Steel Workers Of Montreal) and it's time to get off my ass and start getting the word out again.

To vote for your favorite show at CJAM click here.

The Jammy Awards party is at the Fish Market on April 24 and The Locusts Have No King will be playing the show.

Sweet Static News

Well it's been a long time since I've posted here but I've decided to get back to this again. There is some news though on the radio front.

First off my show is moving from Friday mornings to Thursday nights. Starting this Thursday, December 4 Sweet Static will be on from 7pm to 8pm.

This is a big change for the show. For over the past year, because of work I've had to record the radio show. At first I enjoyed the challenge. It was something different and refreshed the show for me.

However as time went along it there were many factors that I didn't like in doing the show that way. The lack of interaction with people listening, the thrill of doing it live, the chance to check out more music from the station, the chance to interview bands, etc.

But now I'm back on live. I lose an hour of time but it's for the best. I'm looking forward to the challenge of the new length but also to being back on live. So hopefully any listeners of the show will follow and that they'll be new ones.

With that this blog will be back as well. I've kept most of my old playlists from the last few months and will be posting them. I've put up all of November's and will be attempting to post everything that I have a copy of. As well I'll try and post other stuff that I find online that catches my ear or eye.

Alright for now. More playlists and a couple of posts tomorrow. Thanks for listening and reading.

Sweet Static Update

Yeah another one of these update things from when I let it slide. No excuse honestly, I just didn't feel like keeping it going. The stupid thing is that the last couple of months has been incredible. I've seen The Most Serene Republic, Peter Elkas, Rock Plaza Central, The Acorn, The Golden Dogs, The Pack, Young Rival, Neil Young and many others. Plus I've been falling in love with the new albums from The Two-Minute Miracles, The Acorn and The Barmitzvah Brothers among others.

Bottom line is I'm going to try and get this going again. No promises, no big plans for the future, just trying to spread the word on the music that I'm in to at the moment.

Sweet Static Status Update

Yes I'm still alive and here's the scoop on the site.

For the past seven plus years I've worked straight midnights. A month ago I switched to days and I've been having troubles adapting to my new schedule. Before I'd come home from work and do my posting. Well not when I come home from work I'm watching TV or hanging out with friends.

Plus I have to record my show now on Thursdays after work for broadcast the next morning which has changed the dynamic of it for me.

So basically the last month has been me trying to redefine what I want to do with the show and with the site in my head. Honestly there isn't much I want to change except for some new features I've been planning on doing and a new look. I'm tired of this layout so I'm going to pick something new.

So this weekend I'm planning on sitting down and getting the site going again. Not sure there's many people who care but just in case I thought I'd let them know what's going on.

Thanks for stopping by and come back for the new Sweet Static this weekend.

Sweet Static Update

Just a quick update on the site. Been in one of those moods the last couple of weeks and haven't been updating much. Lots going on in personal life (new job coming up, really busy at work, preparing for the DJ gig) so been having trouble getting the energy up to do what I want. Well I should get caught up this weekend. Stuff that's coming up...

-Finish the posts on the free shows in Detroit
-Menage A Trois post from last week
-First of a brand new series of posts
-The Canadian campus radio charts
-My set list from the DJ gig at the bar
-Whatever else I can think of

Just wanted to let people know what's going on. Thanks to everyone for checking out the site.

Sweet Static Update

Hey there. Just thought I'd post a bit on what's going on with the site.

Been a few days from my last post but had a bit of a flooding problem in my place so kept me distracted the last couple of days. Thankfully no major damage. Biggest lose was my box that held together the cd and book for my Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs set. Also my Johnny Cash Personal File case got damaged but the cds are alright and that's the main thing.

Anyways the biggest news is thanks to my friend Paul, Sweet Static now has it's own domain name. I'm pretty stupid computer wise so not sure of all the magic that made this possible or what it means for the future but you can access the site at the brand new location http://sweetstatic.com/ old url http://sweetstatic.blogspot.com/.

Off to the store to grab some things but coming up later today posts on Reno 911 and Julie Doiron.
