Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

New Run With The Kittens Album

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing Run With The Kittens live here in Windsor. Didnt' know anything about them but after checking out their website I thought they looked like a lot of fun and after seeing them they definitely did not disappoint.

Well this week I was happy to see word of a new album coming out in March called Condos & Lofts. Even better was this promo video they made.

For more fun here's a song you should check out

Around The Web

Just some stuff from the last few days that has caught my eye and thought I'd point out.

-i (heart) music has a CBC session with The Barmitzvah Brothers up here.
-Counting Stars on the Ceiling has the NPR show of The Arcade Fire up. Really great show and definitely recommended.
-My Old Kentucky Blog has a mess of "Crazy" covers up. Most of them have been around for a while but always good to have them again since I lost some of them.
-You Ain't No Picasso has a live Stephen Malkmus show up. Haven't listened to it yet (downloading it now) but it has a bunch of new songs in the set list.

Julie Doiron In Windsor This Sunday

Ugh, hate when I fall behind on my posts. Meant to do this Julie Doiron post a couple of days ago but stupid real life kept interfering.

Anyways this Sunday night the great Julie Doiron will be playing at Phog Lounge here in Windsor with Baby Eagle aka Steve Lambke of The Constantines.

I've been playing her new record, Woke Myself Up, a lot on the radio edition of Sweet Static and really like it. It's got the pseudo reunion of Eric's Trip on some songs. I assume live it's just going to be her but damn a few of the songs on the record really rock out.

Anyways tickets are going fast so hopefully you've gotten them or made arrangements. If not I'd contact Phog ASAP and see what they say.

Some goodies though. Her Canadian label Endearing has made an mp3 available.

Julie Doiron-"No More"

Plus here are a couple of videos from her new record, first "No More"

Also one for "Me And My Friend"

Lastly radio free canuckistan has a couple of print interviews with both bands up.

For the Julie Doiron one go here.

Here is the way to the Baby Eagle interview.

Oh I lied. One more link to the post I did on the audio interview with Doiron on CFRU a couple of weeks ago.

More Reno 911

A couple of weeks ago I did a post on the Reno 911 movie that is coming out this week.

Well one of my favorite things was the song that is up on the Jim Dangle Myspace page, called "Proud of Reno". Well thanks to the people of the Reno 911 Livejournal group I was pointed over to a fan site for Thomas Lennon aka Jim Dangle.

Lots of cool stuff there but more importantly is the song. So head to the sounds here to grab it for yourself.

Sweet Static Update

Hey there. Just thought I'd post a bit on what's going on with the site.

Been a few days from my last post but had a bit of a flooding problem in my place so kept me distracted the last couple of days. Thankfully no major damage. Biggest lose was my box that held together the cd and book for my Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs set. Also my Johnny Cash Personal File case got damaged but the cds are alright and that's the main thing.

Anyways the biggest news is thanks to my friend Paul, Sweet Static now has it's own domain name. I'm pretty stupid computer wise so not sure of all the magic that made this possible or what it means for the future but you can access the site at the brand new location http://sweetstatic.com/ old url http://sweetstatic.blogspot.com/.

Off to the store to grab some things but coming up later today posts on Reno 911 and Julie Doiron.

New Kevin Smith/Scott Mosier Smodcast Online

The newest podcast of Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, called their Smodcast, is now online at Quick Stop Entertainment.

The second edition of the show is called A Dubious Super-Power and the webpage for the Smodcast had this description of the show

"In which our heroes ponder about C U Next Tuesdays, discuss the death of a human train wreck, compare amateur porn to Elmo, create a platform for Walt Flanagan's mayoral candidacy, contemplate dalliances with the famous, do bad Salma Hayek impressions, and discern exactly how spineless the fat one is as they relate tales of criminal victimization in major metropolitan areas."

-radio free canuckistan has a couple of interviews with Geoff Berner up. One from last year and then a recent one.

New Jim Bryson Music

Back when I did my old radio show, the focus was alt-country. During the show one artist I really got into was Jim Bryson. I really loved his first record, The Occasionals. So I've kept my eye on him since as he's released another album, The North Side Benches, and also been playing with Kathleen Edwards and Howe Gelb.

So I was quite excited to get an email finding out that his new record will be out on Kelp Records in March, called Bungalows. The Kelp site has a preview track up for download

Arcade Fire Mania Continues

As every mp3 blog in the known world prepares for the upcoming release of The Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, I thought I'd post a couple of things I've found that were cool, to me.

Pitchfork posted a YouTube of an incredible version of "Wake Up" in the lobby after a show in London last week. I've been looking for an mp3 of it but nothing so far. They described it as spine tingling and I agree. Check it out for yourself.

For more fun, The Torture Garden has the band covering The Clash's "Guns Of Brixton" which is their new live staple. To download it out go here.

New Kevin Smith/Scott Mosier Podcast Online

On occasion I swerve away from music to discuss other things in the pop culture world that I like. Mostly it has dealt with Kevin Smith but other things will pop up when the mood strikes (like the Reno 911 post) that I want to try and pimp out.

Anyways besides Smith's excellent movies, I've also been a fan of how down to earth he seems. Whether it's in his Evening With... series or on his funny commentaries on the DVD's, I just really like listening to the guy, especially when teamed with his producer and friend Scott Mosier.

So needless to say that I was quite excited when I found out about the new podcast of the two, called the SModcast. Based from Smith's website devoted to all things pop culture, Quick Stop Entertainment, the podcast is described as, "SModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don't deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren't).

You can get full details on Smodcast and episode one here.
