Just a short update. I've been slacking on the site for a bit. I'm almost caught up on my playlists. If you've emailed the site I apologize for that. I'm sorting through the emails to try and find the ones from real people as opposed to the music based spam I get.

I'll be debuting a new feature in the next day or so. It will be called The Essential Mike Whaley. In it I'll go over some of my favorite songs of all time. They'll be a mix of songs that I love, songs that have personal meaning, songs that just are amazing or just make me laugh. They'll be a short paragraph on each song as well as download link for them. Probably will have two songs at a time.

This week all Christmas music for the season. A note on the Vic Chesnutt song. As I was leaving the house to do the show I first heard of him being in a coma. I wanted to play something from him and in my rush to get on air, I just put on the first song from the album. Upon hearing the song though about half way through I realized it was inappropriate given the circumstances. No message was meant to be made from the song choice and I apologized after the song.

Phog Phest This Saturday

Back a few months ago, CBC Radio 3 ran a contest to name the best live venue in Canada. They started with a hundred nominated venues. They then went to fifty, then twenty and finally ten before naming the winner via an online vote. As most people know by know the winner was Windsor's own, Phog Lounge.

As winner they got a concert from Radio 3. Now with Phog having a very small capacity they've turned it into an outdoor festival, this upcoming Saturday. CBC has brought Holy Fuck, Arkells and Green Go and Phog has brought the best bands from Southern Ontario as well as some friends of the bar from out of town.

WAMM (Windsor Arts & Music Monthly) have brought forth the first schedule for the celebratory show this Saturday. All times are subject to change.

Radio 3 will be broadcasting live from 5-8 pm so you can hear Yellow Wood, Green Go, Arkells and Holy Fuck.

Tribute To Jon Bartlett As A Free Download

I've always been a huge fan of Jon Bartlett's bands from my first exposure. I have no idea when it was exactly but it was around the year 2000 when the first Rhume album, Snack Of Choice, came out. They were playing a show in Windsor at the now defunct Press Club, where I worked the door sometimes and I had played a couple of songs on my radio show to plug the gig. I really enjoyed the record and a friend played on it as well so I grabbed a copy of it before their gig started.

Well then the live show blew me away that night and that would be repeated every time I saw them after. I've been trying to remember how many times they came down here. To my best recollection it was three times as Rhume and once as Bartlett's country outfit Greenfield Main. In the course of the three times I saw Rhume I saw Jon Bartlett do such memorable things as

-in mid song going to the pool table, removing his shoes and socks and putting baby powder on his feet, while not missing any part of the song
-once again in mid song followed a female in the washroom with the mic, not missing and lyrics. Unfortunately the female did not see the humour in this and promptly left the bar right after.
-did the worm across the floor at The Coach & Horses here in Windsor. This may not seem like much but if you've ever been there you know that it takes a great deal of bravery.

From what I've heard these type of things happen often at his show. This video below is one of the most infamous.

For me though it wasn't just the crazy, high energy live shows. I've always been a fan of his music. I always find myself pulling out Rhume's Snack Of Choice and Jeu De Puissance and Greenfield Main's Hunting Tips For Everyone and Barnburners & Heartchurners. He was also in Steaming Toolie but I've never got around to really getting into them but that will be changing.

Sadly there hasn't been much of his own music out the last few years but he's kept busy with his label Kelp, which has put out music from many great bands like The Acorn, Andrew Vincent, Hilotrons and Andy Swan to name a few.

This April Kelp celebrated it's fifteenth anniversary with a mess of shows. On a radio appearance Bartlett was "completely floored on CBC Morning here in Ottawa when John Higney and Alan Neal did their big "reveal" of this compilation. Secretly, throughout the spring, Higney, Rolf Klausener and several schemesters got together and recorded old songs of mine, producing this flattering disc of covers, pretty much all of which are way better than the originals." I should admit that the title of this post is a bit of false advertising. Sweet Static hasn't really gone anywhere. The radio show has been buzzing along but as anyone who might happen upon the website might know, it has suffered. But this is changing. There a couple of reasons I've decided to get back to posting on here

1-I'm on a wave of inspiration from a lot of great music I've been exposed to lately.
2-So much good music coming up for me in the next few weeks. The CBC Radio 3/Phog Lounge Phog Phest is coming up, as well as another trip for me up to Guelph for the Hillside Festival.
3-I would like to considered for the jury for the Polaris Music Prize next year. For those of you who don't know, the Polaris Music Prize is the award for the best Canadian album of the year. It starts out with 185 people voting from all eligible albums and the Long List comes out with 40 albums. They then vote again from those 40 albums and it gets narrowed down to 10 albums. Those are then voted on by the 11 person Grand Jury. However I figure my radio show isn't enough to get on the jury, so I'm bring back the blog back to try and strengthen my case. I'll have more on this later, but I officially want to declare my candidacy for the 2010 Polaris Jury as of today.

Big CJAM News

I've been lazy on doing posts other then my show's playlists (and even those have lagged) but lots have been going on at my radio home, CJAM FM in Windsor.

Late last year the CBC approached the station, wanting to take over our frequency, which they can do since we didn't have protected status. They did say there was a frequency available that would fit our needs. So off the station went and applied for the new frequency and after being approved on a technical basis, today the CRTC approved the move officially. Sometime in the future CJAM will move down the dial from 91.5 FM to 99.1 FM. Same name, same website. Full details are available on the website by clicking here.

Also it's that time of the year again, the annual CJAM awards, The Jammies. Lots of categories and all of your favorite shows are nominated. Voting closes on April 15th so don't wait too long to vote.

I'm off to do my show now but I'm going to get back to posting. Seen some really great shows lately (Ford Pier, United Steel Workers Of Montreal) and it's time to get off my ass and start getting the word out again.

A special show this week. As some of you might know Phog Lounge won the CBC Radio 3 contest to name the best live venue in Canada. Another year has come and gone and despite my erratic posting tendencies another edition of the Sweet Static Baker's Dozen is here. This is not the best or greatest albums of the year. These are the albums that I found myself going back to over and over.

One of the things I enjoy about doing my radio show live is the ability to check out a great deal more music then when I'm recording.

Take last week when I was doing my final Friday broadcast I found the EP from Toronto's Tusks. I had read a review and was interested in checking it out. So I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it.

I definitely recommend checking it out. Their label White Whale has a sample mp3 available from their self-titled EP. Here's the link below.

Yes, a real post. While I was neglecting my own blog here, I was also ignoring most of the other fine blogs I've come to appreciate since starting this. So I hit You Ain't No Picasso and was excited to see a post on the new video by The Bicycles.

They have a brand new album out called Oh No, It's Love and the video is for the title track. Enjoy.

Sweet Static News

Well it's been a long time since I've posted here but I've decided to get back to this again. There is some news though on the radio front.

First off my show is moving from Friday mornings to Thursday nights. Starting this Thursday, December 4 Sweet Static will be on from 7pm to 8pm.

This is a big change for the show. For over the past year, because of work I've had to record the radio show. At first I enjoyed the challenge. It was something different and refreshed the show for me.

However as time went along it there were many factors that I didn't like in doing the show that way. The lack of interaction with people listening, the thrill of doing it live, the chance to check out more music from the station, the chance to interview bands, etc.

But now I'm back on live. I lose an hour of time but it's for the best. I'm looking forward to the challenge of the new length but also to being back on live. So hopefully any listeners of the show will follow and that they'll be new ones.

With that this blog will be back as well. I've kept most of my old playlists from the last few months and will be posting them. I've put up all of November's and will be attempting to post everything that I have a copy of. As well I'll try and post other stuff that I find online that catches my ear or eye.

Ruth Minnikin Playing In Windsor This Friday

A show that I'm really excited about seeing happens this Friday at Phog in Windsor as Ruth Minnikin is coming to town. She'll be joined on the bill by Ron Leary, Reels and The Good Lovelies.

I was first introduced to her when she played in The Guthries and their album Off Windmill remains a favorite of mine to this day. To be honest I haven't really checked out much of her solo stuff other then the album Marooned and Blue but I've always liked her voice. I'm really looking forward to the show.

I have a confession to make. I was slow and I can't believe how slow I was. Flight Of The Conchords have been around for a bit but I've only got into them in the last couple of weeks. I love this band and the show. Like I said I'm coming to this late but I still wanted to share it.

Here are a couple of videos, first for one of my favorite songs, "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)"

Hopefully this doesn't come across as overkill with two posts in one day.

I've always been a big fan of Black Cabbage, a band from Guelph from the '90s. Their time came and went but at the end of last year a group on Facebook was dedicated to hoping the band would reunite for a show and word came that they would be performing at Hillside this year.

Also appearing there will be one of Black Cabbage's main members, Michael O'Connell's new project Culture Reject. The album is out on White Whale Records and is another one I've really gotten into since I've first heard it.

I'm trying to get into Hillside this year as a volunteer and if I'm fortunate enough to be picked I'll definitely be checking out both Black Cabbage and Culture Rejects if possible. Here's a taste of the band from the White Whale website.

Well, it's been a long time since I've posted and got a lot of stuff that has peaked my interest the last few months. No promises on how often the posts will come but I'm going to try and revive this.

First off is Ottawa's Hilotrons. I caught them at Phog Lounge in Windsor back in April. They're on Kelp Records, so I was immediately interested. I checked out the album and to be honest, I wasn't too crazy about them right away.

However I was soon to be proven wrong by their live performance. It was an amazing, high energy show. If you get the chance to see them make sure you try and get out to see them. A couple of songs via the Kelp records website to give you a taste.
