Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Sweet Static Playlist For 10/13

For the show on the 13th of October I was training some new volunteers so things were crazy during the show. I had plans after the show and forgot to post the playlist and just realized it in the last couple of days. Of course I had also deleted the usual well informed version of my playlist, assuming I had posted it already. So today I copied and pasted from the computer at the station the playlist but it is missing the usual info such as album, label, year as well the canadian content, in rotation and request.

But for information sakes I'm posting it now.

More Dave Bidini (Rheostatics) New Stuff

Last week I posted how Dave Bidini had a new song up on his new website. Well this week comes more new stuff.

In January, current Rheostatics Martin Tielli and Dave Bidini as well as former Rheo Dave Clark and friend Ford Pier will be heading out to Calgary to play the music for a performance troop that will do a show based on hockey erotica. The show is called "The Five Hole" and a book will be released in October as a companion piece.

Well up on the page is one of the pieces that's part of the project. It's not a song really but more of a spoken word piece with a bit of music behind it. It won't be for everyone but it's definitely an insight to what hockey erotica is.

Dave Bidini-"Five Hole"

The New Free Zunior Compilation

Once again Zunior is back with another free compilation. Some really great stuff on this compilation including new stuff from Jill Barber and Wayne Petti (Cuff The Duke), older stuff from Jim Guthrie, Ford Pier and The Violet Archers and stuff I talked about recently (The Golden Seal in the Dave Bidini post)

Dave Bidini (Rheostatics) News

Well things have been pretty quiet in Rheostatics land since the public disclosure of their imminent break up (for full details of that see this previous post)

Well Rheostatic/author Dave Bidini has a new website up. It has details of the book he's writing now, Around The World In 80 Gigs, his previously released books, shows he doing now, as well as his travels.

There is also a new song up done with Dave Merritt of The Golden Seals. It's nothing earth shattering but it's still fun and if you're a fan of the band, pure Dave.

Dave Bidini & Dave Merritt-"Song ain't good"

The Anti-Hit List For September 30

Not a lot in this edition of John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List that caught my attention.

Up first is The Beauty Room. Sakamoto called the song "Soul Horizon", "...is like hearing Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonizing over a track from the last Air album" and he's right. A really beautiful song that you can stream on their Myspace page.

Then we have Two Hours Traffic from the East Coast of Canada. With a new EP out, produced by Joel Plaskett the song, "New Love" is a nice bit of power pop. You can stream it on their Myspace page or download it if you'd like from their.

Two Hours Traffic-"New Love"

Honestly not much else caught my interest but that's just me. Other bands hilited include Cale Parks, 2 Bit Pie and Cold War Kids. To see the entire list for this week go here.

Canadian Campus Radio Charts For October 3

Here are the Canadian campus radio charts for the week ending October 3, from Earshot, the official publication of the NCRA.

1 The Hidden Cameras Awoo Evil Evil
2 Junior Boys So This Is Goodbye Domino
3 Les Georges Leningrad Sangue Puro Dare To Care
4 Yo La Tengo I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass Matador
5 The Dears Gang Of Losers Maple Music

7 Chad VanGaalen Skelliconnection Flemish Eye/Sub Pop
8 TV On The Radio Return To Cookie Mountain Interscope
9 Emily Haines And The Soft Skeleton Knives Don't Have Your Back Last Gang
10 The Cape May Glass Mountain Roads Flemish Eye

To view the whole chart go here.

Now, of course, the charts from my home station, CJAM.

1 Golden Dogs Big Eye Little Eye True North

The Anti-Hit List For September 23

As the catching up continues here's a recap of John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for September 23.

Up for is a band from New York called The Isles. Sakamoto points out how hardly anyone has "...been as shameless about its Smiths/Morrissey obsession than this charmingly derivative outfit is." But it's no complaint. Really good song from their new cd, Perfumed Lands.

The Isles-"Major Arcana"

Next up is The New Lou Reeds. Don't know much about them but I really like this song. Some nice blues-rock stuff going on. Definitely worth checking out.

The New Lou Reeds-"You Don't Have To Die"

Up next is Rickie Lee Jones and a song she's done with two ex-Squirrel Nut Zippers members, Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher. They've taken the Zippers song, "Put A Lid On It" and changed it to some critical of the Bush White House, titled "Have You Had Enough?" A fun song (although not for those who like Bush)

Rickie Lee Jones w/Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher-"Have You Had Enough?"

Up next is a local band, The London Apartments, who are starting to have a big reach. A one man project by Windsor's Justin Langlois, that Sakamoto says, "...specializes in music so exquisitely atmospheric, it makes Sigur Ros sound like death-metal." He points out the song, "Summer Takes All My Time" which you can stream on the now mandatory Myspace page.

Lastly is British Columbia's Great Aunt Ida. I had the pleasure of listening to this album a few times as I borrowed from the radio station and loved it. They have three songs up on their homepage but I'll just link to the one on the list and save the other two for later.

Great Aunt Ida-"We Say No"

To check out the rest of this Anti-Hit List you can go here. Others reviewed include The Clash, The Waterboys and Good Shoes.

Sweet Static Update

As I alluded to in the Anti-Hit List review from three weeks ago that I just got around to today, I've been getting behind on the posting but going to make move to stop that in it's tracks.

So upcoming will be the next two Anti-Hit List reviews, a post of a couple of bands that have caught my attention lately, cool stuff I've found on other mp3 blogs and the first ever Sweet Static mix cd.

So there you go. I've made this public so that now I have pressure to come through on what I've promised. But that'll start tomorrow since I'm off to bed now (the joys of working midnights)

The Anti-Hit List For September 16

Yeah I know I'm really far behind but I'm in catch-up mode right now. So let's get to starting to recap John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List from September 16.

Going to start with The Midway State out of Collingwood, Ont. They have four songs up on their Myspace page and Sakamoto recommends "Met A Man At The Top Of The Hill", where he mentions a Ben Fold similarity lyrically and musically. I definitely hear it and am curious to hear some more.

Up next is The Immediate. I guess they are the next big European band and I like it. "A Ghost In This House" has a lot going on but I was liking it right away. You can check it out at their Myspace page.

Lastly we'll check out The Fratellis. Both Sides Of The Mouth has three songs for download, with "Chelsea Dagger" the song that Sakamoto recommends. Real catchy stuff. To check out the songs from Both Sides go here and you can also check out the band's Myspace page here.

That's all for me but the others in this week's list include Skye, Wool and Lloyd Cole.
