Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

The Anti-Hit List for August 26

Really quick recap of John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for August 26.

Going to start with a band I really like. Vancouver's Ox is back and have a new album coming out in October. To tide you over there are two songs from it up on the band's Myspace page, "Miss Idaho" and "Surrender".

Up next is mash-up time from Girl Talk. It's rapping over a bunch of samples. Interesting stuff that has you trying to guess all the familiar songs in the back.
Girl Talk-"Bounce That"

One more mash with a ton of bands. Check out this list; Wheatus, Shaggy, Fatboy Slim, Will Smith, Steve Miller, Weezer and The Kingsmen. Really fun sing along on all the songs here from DJ WyZz. Maybe my favorite mash-up of the year.
DJ WyZz-"The 7th Inning Stretch"

Other stuff on this list includes Blackie And The Rodeo Kings and Joshua Radin a bunch of mashes. To see the entire list head here.

Probably going to be slow updating the rest of the week as I'm moving but then Sweet Static will be fully operational again..

The Anti-Hit List for August 19

Falling behind on The Anti-Hit List so quick reviews of the last two to get caught up. So here is John Sakamoto's picks for last week.

The biggest disappoint for me was seeing him point out The Polyphonic Spree's cover of Nirvana's "Lithium" from Don't Need Anything. I tried to download the song earlier but didn't get it. Really curious in hearing it. Guess I'll have to wait.

But in Polyphonic Spree news a member of the band, Annie Clark's, side project St. Vincent is on the list. You can check out four sweet songs at her/their Myspace page. Definitely recommended.

Next is a band from Edmonton called Red Shag Carpet. Sakamoto points out a catch song called "Drawn In Chalk" Really great song. I see they're touring out east in fall so hopefully they'll come to Windsor sometime. Here's the before mentioned song and one other from their website.
Red Shag Carpet-"Drawn In Chalk"
Red Shag Carpet-"So & So"

Like I said cutting it short due to time constraints and the fact that it's a week and a half old right now. Other stuff on that week's Anti-Hit List includes The Walkmen, Lupen Crook, How I Became The Bomb and Gary Jules.

To check out the entire list you can go here.

Unnamed Music Festival Coming To Windsor At End of September

For those who don't know or care I live in Windsor, Ontario. It can be rough down here musically sometimes (live show wise) but the last couple of years have been really solid. Well it seems that it's going to be picking up a notch here in the next month or so.

It starts with the current student council at the University of Windsor booking bands to start the year (current line-up includes Shout Out Out Out Out, Holy Fuck, K-Os, Matt Mays) but I'll do another post on that later.

The best place in Windsor for bands (in my opinion) is Phog. To start with they have a killer line-up of bands playing this month. Alun Piggins, The Bicycles, Wax Mannequin/Geoff Berner and Lindy are some of the bands playing. Then on the Phog Blog came word of a festival at the end of the month. I'm assuming it's Thursday, Sept. 28 to Saturday, Sept. 20.

From the Phog Blog...

"We have had one of the stongest, most enjoyable months so far with loads of local stuff happening at Phog almost every day. We have an incredible September booked, with a huge surprise at the end of the month, that you'll want to save you pennies for.

To kinda let the cat out of the bag, we are holding a three (?) day event in September. It will be wrought with our favourite out-of-town bands (who can make it), some new interests, and our favourite locals making their appearances.

To add some more mystery, there will be 4 bands per night for three straight nights...and it will be happening simultaneously at two venues!

Yes, eight bands per night...between two venues, which are oh so close to one another.

Tickets will be on sale soon, along with titles of all the people on the bills...and you will not be disappointed.

If you have any questions feel free to ask."

Now doing some detective work (which is basically seeing an ad in Exclaim and a post on the Windsor Stillepost page) my friend and I have figured out that A Northern Chorus will be playing. Also on the bill is The Ride Theory.

A Sonic Unyon ad in Exclaim had the A Northern Chorus show listed as Sept. 29 but their website has it listed as Sept. 30. Also adding to the intrigue is that the show is listed as being with Toshack Highway which is Adam Franklin from Swervedriver's new project. However a look at his website has him playing a show in Toronto and not Windsor on the 30th.

So basically not a lot of info is out there right now but I'll be keeping up on it as much as I can and as soon as more is known it'll be posted here.

Now I'll leave you with songs from the above bands.

A Northern Chorus-"Fragile Day"
Toshack Highway-"Just Landed" demo
The Ride Theory-"Motel Woman"

Not Another Cover Post...

Way back at the start of Sweet Static I did a covers post with the original title, Not Another Cover Post.

The title was a little tongue in check since it seems that every mp3 blog does numerous covers post. Not that there is anything wrong with that since I've always been a huge cover song geek myself.

Well it's back here on Sweet Static. A little longer then I had originally imagined but it's all good. This edition of Not Another Cover Post features three covers of Rock legends. Songs from The Beatles, The Who and The Clash. They are...

The Handsome Family-"Eleanor Rigby"
Cracker-"White Riot"
Waco Brothers-"Baba O'Riley"

As always the songs are in one zip file on Rapidshare.

To get all three songs just go here.

Enjoy.

Another Free Zunior Compilation

Man Zunior is at it again. As I said in the post a couple of a days ago on my favorite download, things are going forward there pretty good. They put up their free compilation, started the new email newsletter with free downloads and also have a bunch of specials.

Well now they've got another compilation, but this one is different. Instead of it being mp3, it's a flac. Now I'm pretty stupid computer and soundwise but I know it's lossless music which means it sounds a ton better. For me I probably won't notice too much but for the sound geeks, it's all about the lossless music. Anyways they have a three song sampler available with these three songs.

1. Mike O'Neill - Mr. Carvery
2. The Inbreds - Never Be
3. Egger - Just Cause You Can

You can get this free sampler here.

I've also taken the songs that were in the Zunior email and uploaded them to Rapidshare for everyone to check out. The songs are...

Mike O'Neill-"Mr. Carvey" from The Owl
Ben Gunning-"Oh Rebel" from Ben Gunning

Make sure you check out the Zunior site. They really have some sweet music at good prices.

The Anti-Hit List For August 12

Here we go with a look at John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for August 12 as seen in the Toronto Star.

First is Ray LaMontagne with the song "Three More Days" from his forthcoming album, "Till The Sun Turns Black". A really nice laidback funk/soul song. Kind of caught me by surprise but I'm really liking it. You can stream it off his Myspace page.

Next we have a band out of Brampton called Five Blank Pages. I think I remember reading about them when I went up NXNE and thought I'd want to check them out and of course I never got around to it. He singles out the song called "She Sleeps Soundly" from a compilation called, A Compilation For Reach The Rainbow. Sakamoto says, "If this sublime slice of pop heaven had been released by a band from, say, Brooklyn instead of Brampton, we'd probably be reading about them on Pitchfork." Definitely worth checking out. You can stream the song on their Myspace page. Which also has these two songs to download.
Five Blank Pages-"A Point Of Reference"
Five Blank Pages-"Richie T"

Lastly we have a mash with Feist and Rare Earth bye Luke Lenlow. "Mashaboom" takes "Mushaboom" and "I Just Want To Celebrate" and is pretty fun.
Feist vs Rare Earth-"Mashaboom"

That's all for my review but also included is stuff on the Be Good Tanyas, Jet, Orson and more. To check out the entire Anti-Hit List you can go here.

Sweet Static Site Update

Well good news for me personally and for Sweet Static.

At the beginning of the summer I had to move and my new place had no internet at it. So I haven't been able to keep up the site like I would of liked to. I've been able to keep it going but have had do it with free computers on the local campus or at the radio station I volunteer at, CJAM.

Well at the end of the month I'll be moving and my new place does indeed have internet so Sweet Static will be back up to full speed. It hasn't been easy to keep it going the last three months but I like to think it's been half decent. However I'm looking forward to being able to get it going and up to my original vision (and also to finish off some of the series I had started)

As for the rest of this week, still to come will be this week's Anti-Hit List (which you can go here if you don't want to wait), a post of cover songs and maybe the songs that Zunior put out for free in their new email update (see previous post)

That's all for today though.

Zunior News

Well for those who check the site out on a regular basis know that one of the features I always had was pointing out the Zunior free download of the week. Zunior is an Canadian online music seller which features a lot of great bands, mostly Canadian, (Constantines, New Pornographers, Blood Meridian, Cub, Neko Case, Greenfield Main, Rheostatics, Alun Piggins, etc.) from a lot of great labels, also mostly Canadian (Mint, Three Gut, Endearing, Outside, etc.)

Well a few weeks back the free download stopped showing up on the Zunior page. It was replaced with an offer for a free sampler compilation, which I've plugged before and will plug again. Check out the track listing

1. Clark -Camera
2. The Scribbled Out Man - Heroics
3. The Golden Seals - The Wrong Mistake
4. The Department of Foreign Affairs - The Drummer's Always Right
5. the feminists - rats
6. Wooden Stars - Outlaws
7. Wax Mannequin - The Price
8. silent five - impatient one
9. The Mountainside Band - Meet Me 1/2 Way
10. Greenfield Main - Wait On Me

Now go here if you want to download it.

Then last week I got an email from the site that had a bunch of special offers, new product info and free songs. Last week's included Ben Gunning (formerly of Local Rabbits) and also Mike O'Neil (formerly of The Inbreds).

So basically it's a pretty sweet feature. Every couple of weeks you get an email update and then a couple of free songs as well.

So head here to sign up for the list.

The Anti-Hit List For August 5

Back once again with John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for August 5.

Going to start off with a weird cover of ZZ Top's "Legs" redone as synth heavy pop song with a female singer. Done by Dutch band Like A Tim it's different but still fairly faithful to the originial. The mp3 is up on the Spoilt Victorian Child blog, which you can find the post here.

Up next is a band from Newfoundland called The Human Soundtrack. Sakamoto points out a song called "Off-Kilter Electronic Blues" which isn't on their Myspace page. He says the songs on the page are almost as good as the one he likes and I have to say I find them pretty decent. I'd like to check out the whole album sometime.

Captain from England is next. Sakamoto points out the song "Accidie" from their forthcoming album This Is Hazelville. Really sweet pop song. Can't remember ever hearing anything about them but I defintely want to find out more now. Check out "Accidie" and three other songs on their Myspace page.

Lastly what would it be without a mash, this time featuring Gnarles Barkley and Hall & Oates. Done by Spin Junkies take "Smiley Faces" and "Maneater" and voila you have "Face Eater". Lots of fun but let's not hope it leads to a Hall & Oates revival like Sakamoto predicts.

Gnarles Barkley vs. Hall & Oates-"Face Eater"

That's all for this week from me. Other things on the list include Jim Noir, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lustra.

To check out the whole Anti-Hit List go here.

The Flaming Lips/Sonic Youth Review

Friday night I went to see The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth and The Go! Team at the State Theatre in Detroit. It was a great line-up that didn't disappoint at all (at least in my eyes)

I didn't know much of The Go! Team's stuff. I had borrowed their album from the radio station a couple of times but didn't get into it at all after a few listens. Live though I really liked them. Pure ball of energy (especially the lead singer). They played a short set, about half an hour, which made me wonder how they would do if they tried to keep that energy up for an hour or so. Can't wait to give that album another try and hopefully get to see them again.

Up next was Sonic Youth. I've never really been a big fan of them. I've like what I've heard but never really explored their catalog. Really amazing to see them live. Lee Ranaldo does some amazing stuff with his guitar. Can't say much about Thurston or Kim since they were at the other side of the stage for most of the show and I couldn't see them much but really tight show and I'm glad I got to see them.

Finally came The Flaming Lips. I was right up front for the show and really glad of it. Now I've seen clips of The Lips in concert and read about it but let me tell you , nothing can prepare for the experience of seeing them live. It was a mindblowing experience and one I can't wait to go through again. So much fun, so much joy. Words can do it no justice, so I'll shut up and just say that if you get a chance to see them then go.

No music to post with this but I will remind you to go check out the Lips/Youth covers post I did a couple of days ago.

Back on Tuesday with The Anti-Hit List review for this week.

Flaming Lips/Sonic Youth Covers

Tomorrow night I get the pleasure of seeing The Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth at the State Theatre in Detroit. Very excited to see both bands (and The Go! Team) for the first time. With that in mind I thought I'd post a couple of covers from each band.

Here are the details of the songs.

Flaming Lips w/Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney)-"War Pigs" from NYE show at MSG (12/31, 2004)
Flaming Lips-"After The Goldrush" from The Bridge: A tribute to Neil Young (1989)

Sonic Youth-"Computer Age" from The Bridge: A tribute to Neil Young (1989)
Sonic Youth-"Superstar" from If I Were A Carpenter (1994)

I've set them up as zip files on Rapidshare. One zip of the two songs for each band.

Quick note, the "War Pigs" is from a crowd bootleg so the quality is only ok.

To get the Sonic Youth covers go here.

To get The Flaming Lips covers head here.

That's all for now. More on the show sometime this weekend.

Zunior Free Download Of The Week

Well it seems that the Zunior free download of the week is no more. This is the second week in a row that they haven't put up an individual track up for download. It kind of sucks if you ask me but then again you can't complain when they're putting up compilation album samplers for free up to download. I went over this a couple of weeks ago but thought I'd throw it out there again.

Here is the list of songs

1. Clark -Camera
2. The Scribbled Out Man - Heroics
3. The Golden Seals - The Wrong Mistake
4. The Department of Foreign Affairs - The Drummer's Always Right
5. the feminists - rats
6. Wooden Stars - Outlaws
7. Wax Mannequin - The Price
8. silent five - impatient one
9. The Mountainside Band - Meet Me 1/2 Way
10. Greenfield Main - Wait On Me

Definitely worth checking out. Some really great music available here and it's for free. To get it you can go here.
