Sweet Static

Yes, another mp3 blog. Trying to share what I like with the world. The music here is for sampling only and are up for a limited time. It's simple really you see. If you like the music then go out and support the artists. Buy a cd/mp3/eight track, make a request on radio, see them live, tell others about it. This way this wonderful medium hopefully won't be stomped on.

Name:
Location: Windsor, Ont, Canada

Sweet Static is an mp3 blog that allows me to share the music I love and also to point out other cool things around the internet that catch my attention. It is also a place where I can talk about my radio show by the same name, now on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm on CJAM 91.5 FM in Windsor, Ontario. Got something I should hear? Sagetmania Continues To Run Wild

I guess this has been around for a month or so but this is the first I've seen of it. Really funny video for "Rolling With Saget" with Jamie Kennedy, Bob Saget and a couple of surprises.

Funny the whole reinvention of Saget with Aristocrats, his forthcoming penguin movie and even his appearance on Joey. Definitely no longer Full House Bob...

Sweet Static Radio Update

Just a quick news flash for the radio edition of Sweet Static. Due to work going on at the University of Windsor campus this Friday, there will be no radio show this week. Basically they're powering down the whole campus to do tests on the electrical system and from what I'm told you need this electricity thing to run the station.

Sweet Static will return next week though.

The Anti-Hit List for June 24

Back with a quick look at John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for June 24.

Just a brief look since I'm on my way to work. Also got no sound on the computer I'm using so flying blind here.

First thing to catch my eye was mention of former Wilco member Jay Bennett's pre-Wilco band Titanic Love Affair. They've got a Myspace going with some of the old songs and includes a never release cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late" I know Bennett has some more stuff up there and I really want to check it out. I loved his post-Wilco album, The Palace at 4 AM but unfortunately haven't had the chance to check out anything else.

Next is a mash-up that I really want to hear. Lenlow has taken Lou Reed, John Lennon and G Love and Special Sauce and put together "Imagine Wild Music" Sounds like it could be fun.

Lenlow-"Imagine Wild Music"

Other stuff mentioned this week includes Lily Allen, Venetian Snares, Howlin' Rain and more.

Sorry this is so short but hopefully this is better then nothing.

To check out the entire list you can go here.

Zunior Free Download Of The Week

This week's free download from Zunior is from Guelph's Calyx. A band with lots of sweet lineage with it's members being in or formerly in such bands as The Barmitzvah Brothers, Nathan Coles Outfit, Black Cabbage, Corduroy Leda and The Neutron Stars, among others.

They have a new album out that's self-titled. From their bio...

"The band’s impassioned performances begin and end with the deceptively shy Hobbs. Her voice is a wonder, containing the angst and elegance of P.J. Harvey, Sinéad O’Connor, Kim Deal, and David Bowie. It’s the perfect instrument to convey her cryptic, emotionally charged lyrics, which she delivers with the aid of some crunchy guitar tone and charged up power chords."

Calyx-"Try Again"

You can also check out a couple of more tracks from the Calyx website

Calyx-"Crucible"
Calyx-"Pale Mouth"

Definitely recommended to check out.

The Replacements

So interrupting my NXNE reviews to put up a post on The Replacements. I picked up the new best of album, Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?, this week and been listening to it hardcore.

Now I have to admit I was really slow in getting into the band. My first exposure to the band came when I swapped mixed tapes with a girl on the Rheostatics email list that I started. This was sometime back in the mid '90s. She put "Alex Chilton" on the tape and I loved it.

I never gave them much thought though after that until 2004. In the middle of my huge love of Drive-By Truckers I read an article in Harp magazine where Patterson Hood talks about an album that influenced him. He talked about Tim. I got a friend to hook me up with a copy of the album. Of course I only listened to it a few times and never gave it much of a chance.

You can read that article here from the Harp website.

Then a few weeks later a bunch of us from the radio station are having some beers and this song comes on the jukebox and I love it. Ask the above mentioned friend and ask who it is and he tells me it's The Replacements and it's on the album he gave me before. The song was "Here Comes A Regular" and I went back to the album and have listened to it lots since then.

So enjoy my two favorite songs from The Replacements, "Here Comes A Regular" and "Alex Chilton" together as a zip file on Rapidshare.

Download them here.

Do yourself a favor and pick it up if you don't know much of the band.

Also for some Replacements/Westerberg rare stuff head over to this classic I Am Fuel, You Are Friends post.

NXNE part 1

Hopefully this falls under the banner of better late then never. Only two weeks late but it's never a bad thing to let people know of good music you've seen.

Hit a couple of bars the first night of NXNE. Started off at the Gladstone to see a couple of friends play, Nathan Coles Outfit and Ten Year Drought. Really nice when there is two bands you want to see playing at the same time and they're right beside each other. Wish I could of caught all of their sets but at crazy festivals you can only do so much.

Nathan Coles Outfit-"I Watch"

Ten Year Drought-"Pianos And Anvils"

From there it was over to The Boat. Really small bar, no stage and lots of buzz. I headed over there base on the recommendation of a couple of friends. Huge line when I got there but thanks to my media pass I was able to get right in. Place was packed and was a really good crowd.

Highlight of the night for me was seeing We're Marching On from Guelph. Really fun band live. Weird stuff musically but good. Great show. Curious to see how the stuff comes off live.

We're Marching On-"The 1800s"

Also got to see The Adam Brown from Montreal. Another fun band live. They were dumb, over the top rock show and I mean that in a good way.

Nothing to download that I can find but four songs are streaming on their Myspace page.

Land of Talk was recommended to me but I only caught a couple of songs at the end of their set. Going to have to give them a listen so I can figure out what to think about them. For now you can judge for yourself.

Land Of Talk-"Speak To Me Bones".

That was it for the first day. More to come tomorrow.

The Anti-Hit List for June 17

As I play catch up with the regular Sweet Static features, here comes one more, John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List.

Going to start with a band called Strays Don't Sleep. Sakamoto says taht they've been called "ambient alt.country" and you can hear that on the song he points out, "For Blue Eyes". However listening to a couple of other songs from their Myspace page and they also have some poppy stuff going on.

Strays Don't Sleep-"For Blue Eyes"
Strays Don't Sleep-"Cars And History"

Next up is a Robert Pollard side project called the Keene Brothers where he teams up with Tommy Keene. A really sweet song and I can't wait to check out more of their stuff when the album comes out.

Keene Brothers-"Death Of The Party"

Other stuff included this week is a Bob Dylan/Missy Elliott mash-up, Junior Boys, Matthew Sweet, Petra Haden, Roddy Frame and more.

To read the entire Anti-Hit List for this week you can head here.

Zunior Free Download Of The Week

This week's freed download from Zunior is from a Montreal band called Orillia Opry. They are from the Ships At Night label.

Andrew Rose of Pop Montreal said of them that they, "...weave beautiful folk-rock tapestry, together with 60s pop sensibilities that deftly avoid the overly dour trap that so many songwriters of a more advanced age fall into." You can download "I Live In A Loft Like An Osprey" at the link below.

Orillia Opry-"I Live In A Loft Like An Osprey"

You can also get a song from the Ships At Night website

Orillia Opry-"Poison House"

A really nice song. I hope to check out more of them. They have that song and two others up on their Myspace page.

Broken Social Scene vs. Canadian Idol Will Never End

Although it's not really new news, me seeing the video is new. Yes here is the long awaited Broken Social Scene video for "Fire Eye'd Boy" that features Geddy Lee and makes more fun of Canadian Idol. Thanks to Pitchfork for pointing the way to the YouTube video.

Thanks to being on the Lost Highway email list I got word that on the Johnny Cash Myspace page they have two songs from the new album, American V: A Hundred Highways streaming.

New PAS/CAL

Ok so I lied. One more post. But it's new stuff.

I was going around checking out some of the mp3 blogs I've fallen behind on and was at one of my daily stops, Largehearted Boy for his daily recap of music news around the web, live shows on torrent and mp3s available for one and all.

Anyways he pointed the way to new music from a favorite of mine, PAS/CAL out of Detroit. They've got an album coming out later this year but to keep us busy they've put up a couple of demos.

PAS/CAL-"Oh Honey, We're Ridiculous"
PAS/CAL-"The Glorious Ballad of the Ignored"

Enjoy them, I know I am.

That's it for today...

I've done enough updating for today. Caught up all the regular features so up next will be my NXNE features.

Until then check out Chromewaves for his NXNE experience.

Zunior's Free Download Of The Week

As Zunior adds more labels to the roster more different stuff comes to light that is different from what was available at the start. Initially all Canadian it's slowly branching out which can only be good for them. First it was Billy Bragg when Outside Music came aboard. Now with Scratch Records comes Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 from Iowa and their song "It Wasn't Me" from 1989.

Don't know much about the band but I'm intrigued by the sound. Definitely interesting stuff.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282-"It Wasn't Me"

The Anti-Hit List for June 10

Back with another brief look at John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List for this week.

Going to start with something I just had to check out. Sakamoto usually puts up a few mash-ups each week and I normally stay away. However when I read the mix of Madonna and Musical Youth I had to check it out. Not the greatest but still fun to hear "Pass The Dutchie" By DJ Earlybird.

Madonna vs. Musical Youth-"Argentina On Da Left Hand Side"

Most of the other stuff on this week's list is from other blogs (and I'm trying to catch up after vacation) so I'm just going to skip over it. Stuff like the Nelly Furtado and Ray Lamontagne cover of "Crazy", the new Yo La Tengo track I posted a couple of weeks ago, new Peaches and more.

Check out the entire list though here.

Canadian Campus Radio Charts for June 6

Ok time to catch up. Back from my excellent weekend in Toronto and time to get back to Sweet Static.

Going to be a mix of posts of regular features (like the charts here) and NXNE reviews.

Forgot to mention last week that there was going to be no radio version of Sweet Static. I could of prerecorded a show but there was no guarantee that the host before me would be there so they had the show of the awesome show I Shot Your Dog, Kristen, fill in so thanks to here. Make sure you check out her show Tuesday mornings from 9 am to 10:30 am on CJAM.

Anyways on to the charts from Earshot, the official charts of the NCRA.

Up, Up And Away or NXNE Here I Come

Not up literally but up the map as I'm making preparations to head to Toronto for NXNE.

My media pass through the station came through so good things with that. Still have no idea who I'm going to go see.

I shouldn't say that. I know on Thursday I'll be seeing the Nathan Coles Outfit with a quick stop to see Windsor's Ten Year Drought.

Friday I'm probably going to be at the Horseshoe most of the night so that I can see C'Mon and White Cowbell Oklahoma.

Saturday afternoon will be the Six Shooter Records BBQ featuring Ford Pier, Selena Martin, Oh Susannah, NQ Arbuckle and more. Plus I'll be hitting a non-NXNE benefit show for Sick Kids Hospital featuring Alun Piggins.

Leaving lots of space open though so if someone recommends something to me I can go anywhere and everywhere.

With that in mind though here's some music of the bands I plan on checking out. Hope you enjoy.

Nathan Coles Outfit-"Found Out"
Ten Year Drought-"Your Favourite Song"
C'Mon-"Rock N Roll Can Break Yr Legs"
White Cowbell Oklahoma-"Southern Grace"
Selina Martin-"Ordinary Love"
NQ Arbuckle-"Danko Manuel" Drive-By Truckers cover
Ford Pier-"The Unseen World"
Alun Piggins-"Heading Out West"

Hopefully an update from Toronto if I can get some quick web access. If not then Sunday or Monday I'll be back with thoughts on NXNE and perhaps some stupid interviews that I like to do.

Zunior Free Download Of The Week

This week's free download of the week from Zunior comes from Chad VanGaalen.

His album, Infiniheart, was a collection of bedroom recordings over a few years. He got lots of love from the Canadian press and then he got picked up on Sub Pop. Not sure when anything new will be coming but enjoy a taste of Chad courtesy of Zunior.

Chad VanGaalen-"Traffic"

As an extra bonus you can watch the video for "Clinically Dead" thanks you YouTube.

Zunior News

Just a short news note from my favorite online music store Zunior. In this week's monthly email Zunior released details of their newest venture, called Zunior Digital Vinyl. Here's the rundown from the email

"Coming next month is the new Zunior Digital Vinyl program. We are
going to digitally convert hundreds of out-of-print vinyl 45's to super
high-quality digital. You won t find this music anywhere but Zunior.
Classics from The Inbreds, Elevator and even the Rheostatics...get ready
for the digital release of their EXTREMELY rare 45 featuring the songs
Satellite Dancing/My Generation. Indie rock heritage, only at Zunior!"

This is pretty sweet and good to see that some of these classic songs won't be lost in this digital age.

The Anti-Hit List for June 3

Can't get any sound this week (the joys of campus computer labs) but I'll still point out stuff that I intend to check out on John Sakamoto's Anti-Hit List.

A bunch of stuff I can't wait to check out.

Going to start with Sean Lennon. His one and only album, Into The Sun, was a favorite of mine. In September he's going to release another record called Friendly Fire. He has a song from it, "Dead Meat" up on his Myspace page (linked above). There's also a YouTube video preview for the record.

I'm really looking forward to this. Like I said I really enjoyed Into The Sun so can't wait to see what this record brings.

Up next is the Hylozoists out of Toronto. They have a new record out on Boompa. Sakamoto points out the instrumental track "If Only Your Heart Was A Major Sixth", which I assume is on their Myspace (linked above) I know a friend of mine in Toronto raves about them and she has good taste so do yourself a favor and check them out. The Boompa site has a song to download.

Hylozoists-"Straight Is The Gate"

Since I can't hear any of the music I'm going to take a pass on recommending anything else. Lennon and Hylozoists I at least know a little to talk about. The rest of the list I'm not sure although I do plan on checking out Smoosh and Hello Saferide from the description.

To read the entire Anti-Hit List for this week head here.

New Yo La Tengo/Sweet Static Update

Well I just moved which sucks for numerous reasons. Least of which is a lack of internet at the house. So needless to say updates won't be as frequent as before but hopefully the site will be still useful to some degree.

With this in mind I was just reading the latest email from Matador Records and they had this to say about the forthcoming Yo La Tengo record.

"On September 12 (September 4 in places other than North America) we'll
be releasing a new CD / double LP by a trio we've creatively nicknamed
"America's Best Band"

Where do Yo La Tengo get off, delivering the most focused, wildly
entertaining album of their longer-than-long tenure? Where does the record
label get off, using catchphrases like "putting the 'oomph' back in
'eclectic'"? Where do you YOU get off, looking for greater details, like
the sort of person who insists on knowing how the cliffhanger ends
before the trailer even starts?

Ira, Georgia and James --- aided by longtime recording associate Roger
Mountenot, have made a habit of blowing us away and confounding
expectations time and time again, but with 'I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will
Beat Your Ass' (title culled from Kurt Thomas' words of warning to
Stephon Marbury) the trio have raised their game to unparalled heights,
creating a multi-genre masterpiece certain to win Nobel Prize
consideration. Or would you believe the Plug Awards? Either way, the believing's
in the hearing."

They also pointed the way to an early version of the song Beanbag and here you go below.

Yo La Tengo-"Beanbag Chair"

I haven't checked it out but will be sometime soon hopefully.

Anyways off for now. Back tomorrow with the Anti-Hit List for this week.
